This disappearing Cheshire Cat machine embroidery design captures the Wonderland character halfway through a magical vanishing act. His relaxed pose, enormous grin and uncoiling striped body create a playful focal point for storybook textiles, tea-party décor and gifts for readers.

The design is digitized as filled embroidery rather than appliqué. Eight Madeira Classic Rayon colors build the turquoise, green, purple, pink, white and dark details, while open spaces between the body coils strengthen the illusion that the cat is dissolving into the air.

Design Sizes and File Formats

Size: 98.4x93.8 mm (3.87x3.69 "), Stitches: 15871
Size: 118.2x113.0 mm (4.65x4.45 "), Stitches: 20031

Formats: .dst, .pec, .vip, .hus, .pes, .exp, dat, jef, .vp3, .tab, xxx

This is a digital machine embroidery file. It is not a finished patch, printed picture or physical product. Download the ZIP folder after purchase, extract the files and transfer the format required by your embroidery machine.

Correct Hoop Sizes

  • 98.4x93.8 mm design — 100x100 mm (3.94x3.94") embroidery field, commonly called a 4x4" hoop
  • 118.2x113.0 mm design — 130x180 mm (5.12x7.09") embroidery field, commonly called a 5x7" hoop

The smaller file uses almost the full width of a true 100x100 mm field. Check the actual embroidery field supported by your machine, not only the outer dimensions printed on the hoop. Read the embroidery hoop sizes and stitching fields guide if your machine uses rounded commercial hoop names.

Original Madeira Classic Rayon Color Sequence

The original RPE-362 color chart uses 8 Madeira Classic Rayon No. 40 colors in 12 programmed blocks. Both design sizes use the same sequence. Keep the order shown below even when substituting another thread brand.

1 Madeira Classic 1110 Inner ears and first pink front-paw details
2 Madeira Classic 1004 White grin and teeth
3 Madeira Classic 1311 Light purple bands inside the disappearing body and tail coils
4 Madeira Classic 1289 Blue-green base at the lower tail tip
5 Madeira Classic 1302 Green cheeks, paws, body stripes and tail-tip areas
6 Madeira Classic 1176 Main turquoise-blue fur, head, body and spiral tail sections

Unique colors: 8.
Programmed color blocks: 12.
Thread changes: 11.

The colored squares reproduce the swatches shown in the original Royal Present gallery chart. Thread color can look different on a monitor and under different lighting, so select physical spools by the Madeira numbers.

Fabric, Stabilizer and Needle Guide

Project fabric Recommended stabilizer Needle
Cotton, linen or firm napkin fabric Medium-weight tear-away, hooped with the fabric Embroidery 75/11
Denim, canvas or bag fabric Medium tear-away or cut-away for frequently used items Sharp embroidery 75/11
Sweatshirt fabric, jersey or knitwear Medium cut-away or no-show mesh; do not stretch while hooping Ballpoint embroidery 75/11
Fleece or terry cloth Cut-away underneath plus water-soluble film on top Embroidery 75/11

This is a filled, moderately dense character design. Avoid using water-soluble topping as the only support layer. If you are unsure which backing suits the fabric, use the machine embroidery stabilizer guide.

How to Embroider the Cheshire Cat

  1. Prewash washable fabric if the finished item will be laundered.
  2. Mark the center and both axes of the intended placement.
  3. Hoop the fabric and stabilizer evenly without stretching or distorting the weave.
  4. Use Madeira Classic Rayon No. 40 or another quality 40-weight embroidery thread with standard embroidery bobbin thread.
  5. Load the correct file size and confirm that the machine shows the complete design inside its stitching field.
  6. Follow all 12 programmed color blocks. Do not combine repeated colors unless your machine software confirms that no intervening block is required.
  7. Remove the stabilizer according to its type and press the embroidery from the wrong side over a soft towel.

Project Ideas

  • Alice in Wonderland tea-party napkins and placemats
  • Reader gifts, book bags and fabric book covers
  • Children’s sweatshirts, denim jackets and backpacks
  • Decorative cushions and themed quilt blocks
  • Birthday banners, favor bags and reusable gift bags
  • Makeup bags, zipper pouches and small wall panels

The open spaces between the coils allow the fabric color to become part of the disappearing effect. A pale neutral background keeps the turquoise and green palette bright; a dark background creates a more dramatic Wonderland look but requires sufficient contrast for the dark outline.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will the smaller Cheshire Cat file fit a 4x4 hoop?
Yes. The 98.4x93.8 mm file fits a true 100x100 mm embroidery field. Because the width is close to the field limit, verify the maximum sewing area of your machine before transferring the file.

Which hoop is required for the larger size?
The 118.2x113.0 mm file requires at least a 130x180 mm embroidery field, commonly called a 5x7" hoop.

Can I change the Cheshire Cat colors?
Yes. Preserve strong contrast between the main fur, green sections, purple bands, white facial details and dark outlines. Follow the programmed block order even when substituting colors.

Is this an appliqué or freestanding lace design?
No. It is a filled machine embroidery design stitched directly onto fabric with stabilizer.

Can I embroider it on a sweatshirt?
Yes. Use medium cut-away or no-show mesh stabilizer and a 75/11 ballpoint embroidery needle. Do not stretch the knit fabric in the hoop.

May I sell items embroidered with this file?
You may use the design for personal projects or finished items for sale. The digital embroidery files themselves may not be resold, shared or traded.
