Hoop compatibility

Original design size Suitable embroidery field Exact limitation
55.5x74.4 mm (2.19x2.93") 80x80 mm (3x3") or larger Both dimensions remain within a true 80x80 mm embroidery field.
61.1x82.0 mm (2.41x3.23") 100x100 mm (4x4") or larger The 82.0 mm height exceeds a true 80x80 mm field.
67.2x90.1 mm (2.65x3.55") 100x100 mm (4x4") or larger The 90.1 mm height requires an embroidery field larger than 80 mm.

Compare both listed dimensions with the actual embroidery field supported by your machine. The commercial name printed on a plastic hoop does not always describe the exact area in which the needle can sew.

Step-by-step ITH instructions

The illustrated tutorial explains how to print and use the cutting template, prepare the two felt pieces, stitch the placement line, add the front and backing, position the ribbon loop and complete the final assembly seam.

Open Step-by-Step ITH Instructions

The instructions open in a separate browser window so they can remain visible while you prepare the ornament.

How the raw-edge ornament is assembled

Stage What happens in the hoop
1. Placement line The first programmed outline marks the position of the ornament on the hooped tear-away stabilizer.
2. Front attachment The pre-cut front piece is positioned over the placement line and secured by the next outline.
3. Decorative embroidery The gold scrollwork, marching drummer, uniform, drum and final dark details are embroidered on the front.
4. Backing and ribbon The folded ribbon loop and second pre-cut piece are secured to the reverse of the hoop.
5. Final assembly seam The final programmed outline joins the embroidered front, ribbon ends and backing.

Do not use automatic color sorting. The first two blocks and the final block are part of the ITH construction, while repeated shades add details over previously embroidered areas.

Madeira Classic Rayon 40 color chart

The original RPE-3797-fr12 worksheet uses nine Madeira Classic shades across 13 programmed embroidery blocks. The worksheet records 12 color changes because the first block begins before the first change.

The color names below describe the visible screen appearance. Use the Madeira numbers as the primary reference because thread sheen, lighting and monitor settings can alter the displayed color.

Block Color Madeira Classic Embroidery function
1 1249 — bright green First placement line stitched on the hooped stabilizer
2 1004 — off-white Front-piece securing outline
3 1159 — antique gold Decorative scrollwork and first gold details
4 1087 — medium brown First brown areas in the shoes, hair and drummer details
5 1170 — olive green Trousers and green uniform sections
6 1037 — Christmas red Coat, hat and red drum sections
7 1145 — dark brown Dark shoe, hair and shaded details
8 1087 — medium brown Drumsticks, hair and additional drum details
9 1149 — light beige Face, hands, stockings and pale drum details
10 1159 — antique gold Upper gold trim on the hat, uniform and drum
11 1145 — dark brown Additional shaded details and contours
12 1006 — black Final character outlines and definition
13 1149 — light beige Final assembly seam joining the front, ribbon ends and backing

For the final assembly block, wind a bobbin with thread matching Madeira Classic 1149 or the substitute chosen for the outer seam. The back of the ornament remains visible, so a matching upper and bobbin thread gives the cleanest finish.

If another thread brand is required, enter the Madeira numbers into the Royal Present Madeira thread converter and compare the suggested substitute with a physical thread chart.

Materials and supplies

Material Exact recommendation Purpose
Front and backing Two pieces of felt or another stable, non-fraying fabric The cut edge remains visible in the finished raw-edge ornament.
Stabilizer Madeira Cotton Soft tear-away stabilizer — 50 g/m² Supports the placement, decorative embroidery and assembly seam and tears away after completion.
Temporary adhesive Optional Gunold KK 100 temporary adhesive spray Temporarily holds the pre-cut front and backing without permanent bonding.
Needle Schmetz Embroidery 130/705 H-E, NM 75/11 Suitable for standard 40-weight embroidery thread and medium felt.
Embroidery thread 40-weight rayon or polyester machine embroidery thread Rayon provides a reflective decorative finish; polyester offers greater abrasion resistance.
Hanging loop 15–20 cm (6–8") of narrow satin or grosgrain ribbon The folded ribbon ends are caught by the final assembly seam.
Temporary fixing Low-tack embroidery tape or masking tape Holds the backing and ribbon away from the machine foot during final assembly.
Cutting tools Small sharp scissors or decorative-edge scissors Decorative-edge scissors can be used to give the exposed fabric edge a more decorative finish.

If Gunold KK 100 is used, spray it lightly onto the stabilizer away from the embroidery machine. Do not spray toward the hoop, needle area, hook assembly or machine electronics.

Practical tips for this drummer ornament

  • Print the supplied cutting template at 100% or Actual Size. Do not select Fit to Page.
  • Cut two identical fabric pieces: one embroidered front and one plain backing.
  • Use the smallest compatible hoop to reduce movement around the narrow legs, drumsticks and final outlines.
  • Keep the original color-block order. Blocks 1, 2 and 13 control the ITH construction.
  • Do not stretch felt or stabilizer while positioning the hoop.
  • Reduce the machine speed to approximately 500–650 stitches per minute if the drumsticks, narrow legs or final dark outlines begin to lose registration.
  • Before the final block, check both sides of the hoop. Tape, excess ribbon and loose fabric must remain outside the assembly-seam path.
  • Support the stitched edge while removing Madeira Cotton Soft so the final seam is not pulled or distorted.

Christmas decorating ideas

Use the finished drummer as a Christmas tree ornament, fabric gift tag, stocking decoration, place-setting accent or small holiday keepsake. It can also be combined with matching designs on a garland or displayed as part of a complete Twelve Days of Christmas ornament collection.

For an additional decorative detail, attach a small satin or grosgrain bow at the base of the hanging loop after the ornament is complete. Secure the bow with several hand stitches or a small amount of suitable textile adhesive, then hang the finished ornament on the Christmas tree.

Frequently asked questions

Do all three sizes fit a 4x4 hoop?

Yes. The largest file measures 67.2x90.1 mm (2.65x3.55"), so all three original sizes fit within a true 100x100 mm (4x4") embroidery field.

Which size fits an 80x80 mm hoop?

Only the 55.5x74.4 mm (2.19x2.93") file fits within a true 80x80 mm (3x3") embroidery field. The other two files exceed 80 mm in height.

Does the ornament need to be turned or stuffed?

No. This is a flat raw-edge ITH ornament. The final machine-embroidered seam joins the front, ribbon ends and backing without a turning opening, stuffing or hand-sewn closure.

Can I change the thread colors?

Yes, but preserve contrast between the red uniform, green trousers, gold details, beige areas and dark outlines. Do not change the programmed block order because the first two and final blocks control the ITH assembly.

Can I sell finished ornaments made with this design?

Yes. You may sell finished physical ornaments in small quantities. The digital embroidery files and printable templates may not be sold, shared or redistributed.
