Stabilizer, Needle and Hooping

For linen, cotton, gabardine and other stable woven fabrics, start with a medium-weight tear-away stabilizer around 50–70 g/m². Suitable options include Madeira Cotton Soft 50 g/m², Gunold STIFFY 1650 50 g/m² or a comparable adhesive tear-away for fabric that tends to shift. For the largest version or loosely woven linen, test a firmer backing such as Gunold STIFFY 1950 80 g/m². Use a piece wide enough to cover the complete hoop rather than placing a narrow strip only beneath the design.

Use a soft cutaway stabilizer around 70–90 g/m² on sweatshirt fleece, interlock and other stretchy knits. For terry towels, fleece or velvet, keep the structural stabilizer underneath and add a thin water-soluble topping such as Madeira Avalon Film above the fabric. Topping holds the pile below the stitches but does not replace the backing underneath.

With standard No. 40 rayon or polyester embroidery thread, begin with a new 75/11 embroidery needle. After testing, an 80/12 needle may be more suitable for dense linen, upholstery fabric or a layered blank. Hoop the fabric and stabilizer together without stretching them.
