Baroque French Hen ITH Christmas Tree Ornament is a digital raw-edge machine embroidery design for making one flat felt hanging entirely in the hoop. The design features one baroque French hen with red plumage, a deep-green tail, a silver-gray wing and a mustard-gold scroll. It represents the third gift in The Twelve Days of Christmas.
Each stitch-out produces one baroque French hen Christmas tree hanging. The download includes three prepared sizes, printable outlines for cutting the front and back pieces, 14 machine formats and the original Madeira Classic 40 color sequence. The finished piece requires no turning, stuffing or hand-sewn closing opening.

The measurements describe the machine embroidery field. The hanging loop and an optional decorative bow extend beyond the listed dimensions. Estimated upper-thread use is approximately 18.43 m (20.2 yd), 22.58 m (24.7 yd) and 27.07 m (29.6 yd), respectively.

In-the-Hoop Assembly Sequence

Madeira Classic 40 Color Map
The original RPE-3797-fr3 chart uses 8 thread colors in 10 programmed blocks, with 9 color changes. Madeira 1159 returns for separate gold details, and Madeira 1149 is used first for the front tackdown and later for the final assembly seam. Keep every block in its saved position and disable automatic color sorting.

Wind the bobbin with a thread close to Madeira 1149 before block 10 because the joining seam remains visible on the back of the ornament. Screen colors are approximate; use the Madeira number and a physical thread chart when an exact match matters.
Choosing Felt for a Clean Raw Edge

Ivory, warm cream and pale champagne felt give the clearest contrast with the black outline, white breast and gold scroll. Avoid loose soft felt, 2–3 mm sheets, self-adhesive felt and EVA foam. Before cutting all pieces, make a small inward curve in a scrap and rub the cut edge between your fingers. Suitable felt keeps the curve without stretching or releasing a fuzzy fringe.
Changing the Finish with Thread
- Classic sheen: Madeira Classic Rayon 40 gives the red plumage and mustard-gold scroll a polished holiday finish while matching the original stitch density.
- Matte vintage contrast: stitch the red, green and gray plumage in Madeira Frosted Matt 40, but keep blocks 3 and 8 in Classic Rayon 1159. The contrast makes the gold scroll and small accents appear brighter without changing the file.
- Controlled metallic accent: test a Madeira Metallic 40 or Sulky Original Metallic substitute only in block 3, where the large scroll has room for a specialty thread. Return to ordinary 40-weight rayon for block 8 because the beak and narrow legs are less forgiving.
For a fine metallic test, use a Metallic 90/14 needle, a smooth thread path and approximately 500–600 stitches per minute. Test the complete gold block on the same felt and stabilizer first; spool support and machine tension can change the result more than the thread brand alone.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many hens does each machine file stitch?
Each machine file stitches one baroque French hen. The ZIP archive contains the same single-hen design in three prepared sizes.
Which size fits an 80x80 mm hoop?
Only the 78.0x77.9 mm (3.07x3.07") file fits an 80x80 mm (3x3") embroidery field. The 87.9x87.9 and 97.9x97.9 mm files require a 100x100 mm (4x4") hoop or larger.
When should the backing and ribbon be added?
Add them after black block 9 and before block 10. The last Tusk-colored outline joins the front and backing while securing both ends of the hanging loop.
Can repeated Madeira colors be combined?
No. Madeira 1159 and 1149 return for different decorative or construction steps. Merging those blocks or using automatic color sorting can change the layering and break the ITH assembly order.
Does the ornament need turning or stuffing?
No. This is a flat raw-edge ITH project. The final machine-embroidered seam joins the front, ribbon ends and backing without a turning opening, stuffing or hand-sewn closure.
