Use it as statement embroidery on skirt panels, tunics, blouses, wool garments, cushion covers, table runners, curtains or embroidered bags. Ideas for using the Indian ornament

The vertical composition works especially well when it follows the construction lines of a garment or textile item. On a skirt, place one motif on each front panel or repeat it around the hem at equal intervals. On a tunic or blouse, it can be positioned vertically from the lower edge, beside a neckline or along one side of the front.

  • Skirts and dresses: repeat the motif on separate panels or arrange several copies around the hem.
  • Tunics and blouses: place it vertically on the front, near a side seam or beside the neckline.
  • Wool clothing: embroider it on waistcoats, jackets, coat panels or firm wool skirts.
  • Curtains: repeat the design along the lower edge or use one motif on each curtain panel.
  • Home décor: use the ornament on cushion fronts, table runners, decorative panels or wall hangings.
  • Bags: place the design vertically on a tote bag, clutch panel or structured fabric handbag.

Coordinating Indian embroidery designs

Suitable embroidery hoops

Check the actual usable embroidery field of your machine. The commercial hoop name alone does not guarantee that the design will fit.

Design size Suitable embroidery field
104.4x178.8 mm (4.11x7.04 ") 130x180 mm (5x7 inch) hoop or larger.
127.4x218.2 mm (5.02x8.59 ") 140x220 mm (5.5x8.6 inch) hoop or larger.
139.1x238.1 mm (5.48x9.37 ") 160x240 mm (6.3x9.45 inch) hoop or larger.
158.0x270.4 mm (6.22x10.65 ") 180x300 mm (7.09x11.81 inch) hoop or larger.

Madeira Classic 40 color chart

The sequence below follows the technical chart for the smallest size. It uses five thread colors, four color changes and approximately 82.19 m of upper thread. Thread consumption increases for the larger files.

Order Color Brand and number Color name Embroidered segments
1
Madeira Classic 1006 Diamond Black Dark lattice background inside the central medallion.
2
Madeira Classic 1132 Clear Blue Main turquoise frame, scrolling branches, leaves and ornamental outlines.
3
Madeira Classic 1135 Baby Chick Yellow Large pale-gold fan-shaped flowers and central floral elements.
4
Madeira Classic 1083 Daisy Yellow Lower flowers, small gold curls and additional floral accents.
5
Madeira Classic 1289 Silver Mound Blue Light blue leaves, feathered elements and final highlights throughout the ornament.

Recommended stabilizers

Choose the backing according to the fabric and the selected design size. Because this is a large filled motif, flexible garments and wool fabrics need permanent support. Tear-away backing is appropriate only for firmly woven, non-stretch fabric.

Stabilizer Weight Recommended use Removal
OESD HeavyWeight CutAway 2.5 oz/yd² Large sizes on wool clothing, knits, flexible fabrics and densely embroidered garment panels. Trim the excess backing after embroidery. Permanent support remains beneath the stitches.
Sulky Cut-Away Plus 2.0 oz/yd² Sweaters, jackets, wool skirts and medium-weight garments. Test two layers for the largest size or softer fabric. Cut away around the design without cutting the fabric or embroidery stitches.
OESD Heavy Weight TearAway 2.5 oz/yd² Firm non-stretch linen, cotton, canvas or twill when permanent backing is not desired. Tears crisply. Hold the embroidered edge while removing it so the stitches are not pulled.
OESD Medium Weight TearAway 1.5 oz/yd² The smallest size on firm, stable woven fabric. Use additional support if a test sample puckers. Remove one layer at a time while supporting the embroidery with your fingers.
Sulky Solvy or OESD StitcH2O Water-soluble film Use as a topping on fuzzy wool, velvet or textured fabric to prevent stitches from sinking into the surface. Remove the excess film and dissolve the remaining pieces with water.

How to embroider the design on wool

  1. Test the complete design on a scrap of the same wool fabric. Wool thickness, surface pile and elasticity can change the result considerably.
  2. Mark the vertical centerline and horizontal placement line. The long composition makes even a small rotation visible.
  3. Hoop the fabric together with a 2.0–2.5 oz/yd² cut-away stabilizer whenever possible. Do not stretch the wool while hooping.
  4. For thick fabric that should not be hooped, hoop an adhesive stabilizer and secure the fabric on top. Add basting stitches around the embroidery area.
  5. Use a 75/11 sharp embroidery needle for medium-weight woven wool or an 80/12 sharp needle for heavier fabric. Replace the needle if the stitches become uneven.
  6. Add water-soluble topping only when the wool has a visible pile or textured surface.
  7. After embroidery, remove the item from the hoop and trim the cut-away stabilizer carefully, leaving enough backing to support the filled areas.

If temporary spray adhesive is used, spray a light coating onto the stabilizer away from the embroidery machine. Allow it to become tacky before applying the fabric. Do not spray inside the machine area and avoid excessive adhesive, which can collect lint and leave residue on needles, hoops and machine parts.

Thread and embroidery settings

  • Madeira Classic 40 rayon gives the turquoise and gold areas a bright, reflective finish.
  • Use 40-weight polyester thread for bags, table linens or garments that will be washed frequently.
  • Use embroidery bobbin thread recommended for your machine and check the upper-thread tension on the test sample.
  • A moderate embroidery speed of approximately 550–700 stitches per minute can improve registration on the layered central medallion.
  • Watch the fabric during the first color section. Movement at the dark medallion will affect the alignment of every following color.

Important quality checks

  • Do not use the design on thin chiffon or very lightweight blouse fabric without testing and adequate permanent support.
  • Do not stretch knit or wool fabric to fill the hoop. It will contract and pucker after removal.
  • Use the smallest hoop that accommodates the selected file.
  • Do not substantially resize the embroidery file in the machine. Resizing can alter stitch density, underlay and registration.
  • Always test the selected size with the same fabric, backing, needle and thread intended for the finished item.

Frequently asked questions

Does this design fit a 5x7 inch hoop?
Only the 104.4x178.8 mm (4.11x7.04 ") file fits a hoop with an actual embroidery field of at least 130x180 mm. The other three sizes require larger hoops.

Is this a finished embroidered product?
No. This product contains digital machine embroidery files. Fabric, thread, clothing and finished embroidered items are not included.

Can I change the thread colors?
Yes. Keep the five-color sequence but replace the shades with colors that suit your fabric. Stitch a sample first because fabric color changes the visual contrast of the central medallion and light blue details.

How will I receive the free design?
Add the free design and the paid designs you want to purchase to the same cart. After checkout and payment, all designs included in that order will become available for download.
