Why is Madeira 1051 shown in green?

It is not a decorative green detail. This block stitches the technical contour that secures the backing and gives the line for trimming both fabrics. Load a thread that matches the front fabric instead of green before this block stitches.

How do I keep the stabilizer inside the double-sided placemat?

After the rope pattern stitches, remove only the hoop from the machine and turn it over. Apply temporary spray adhesive to the stabilizer, attach the backing fabric, then return the hoop. Stitch the technical contour in the fabric-matching thread, trim front and backing close to that line, then stitch the final satin edge. Remove only the stabilizer outside the finished edge.

What stabilizer works for this project?

The supplied guide uses two layers of tear-away Vlieseline Stickvlies or Stitch-N-Tear fixed with temporary adhesive. When substituting stabilizer, a starting point for total support is fabric weight in g/m² divided by 3. In US units, 5.3 oz/yd² fabric starts at about 1.8 oz/yd² of total backing. Test the full construction first, especially on loose linen.

Can I make a thinner single-layer placemat?

Yes. Omit the backing fabric. After the technical contour, trim only the front fabric, complete the satin edge, then tear away the stabilizer from the reverse and clean the thread tails. The result is lighter, with no backing fabric and no stabilizer enclosed inside.
