The Waratah Flower Machine Embroidery Design depicts the sculptural bloom and strong foliage of Telopea speciosissima, the floral emblem of New South Wales. Its layered red and pink stitches create a realistic Australian botanical embroidery suitable for denim jackets, decorative cushions, tote bags, wall panels and statement home décor.

Where to use the Waratah embroidery

The vertical composition works especially well on the back of a denim jacket, the front of a large tote bag, a linen cushion, a fabric wall panel or the center of a botanical table runner. The three largest versions make a strong focal design for oversized hoops and should be placed where the complete flower can be seen without seams, pockets or thick garment joins crossing the embroidery area.

On a decorative cushion, position the flower slightly above the visual center so the lower stem is not hidden by the cushion’s curve. For a jacket, mark the center line while the garment is lying flat and keep the flower above the lower waistband seam.

Madeira thread color chart and stitch sequence

The chart below follows the color order shown in the design artwork. Screen colors are a visual guide; select threads by the Madeira Classic number whenever possible.

Order Color Thread number and name Embroidered segment
1 Madeira Classic 1048 – Green Primary fills of the leaves and stem.
2 Madeira Classic 1170 – Green Leaf shadows and darker areas of the foliage.
3 Madeira Classic 1248 – Green Light leaf areas and directional highlights.
4 Madeira Classic 1303 – Dark Green Leaf outlines, veins and dark stem details.
5 Madeira Classic 1020 – Peach Light inner florets and warm highlights in the flower head.
6 Madeira Classic 1107 – Pink Pink fills and dimensional details of the central flower.
7 Madeira Classic 1039 – Ruby Deep shadows in the flower head and darker bract sections.
8 Madeira Classic 1179 – Dark Peach Outer bracts and warm red midtones.
9 Madeira Classic 1036 – Brown Final outlines, flower structure and the deepest details.

Color-chart note: the artwork for several sizes lists Madeira Classic 1107 at color change 6, while the chart shown for the smallest size labels this change as Madeira Classic 1307 – Coral. Check the color chart supplied with the exact size you are stitching before threading the machine.

Stabilizers for this high-stitch-count design

Stabilizer Type and weight Recommended use Removal
Gunold STIFFY 1650 Tear-away, 50 g/m² (1.47 oz/yd²) Stable denim, firm cotton and canvas. For this design, use two layers with their strongest directions placed at right angles. Tears in several directions and normally removes cleanly. Hold the stitches while tearing.
Floriani Medium Tearaway Tear-away, 51 g/m² (1.5 oz/yd²) Stable woven fabrics and denim. It may be used as a second support layer beneath a permanent stabilizer. Clean tear, but it should be removed in small sections around the dense flower.
OESD StabilStick TearAway Self-adhesive tear-away, 51 g/m² (1.5 oz/yd²) Useful when a tote, jacket panel or completed item cannot be hooped conventionally. Add a non-adhesive supporting layer for the larger sizes. Tears away after stitching. Avoid placing the adhesive surface where it can contact moving machine parts.
Madeira Super Strong Cut-away, 80 g/m² (2.36 oz/yd²) Recommended for open-weave linen, loose canvas, stretch denim and the largest high-stitch-count versions. Trim the excess approximately 6–10 mm (0.24–0.39") from the embroidery. The remaining stabilizer provides permanent support.

Practical embroidery settings

Use 40 wt rayon thread when you want strong light reflection across the directional fills. The long stitches in the petals and leaves catch light from different angles, creating a silky effect that is difficult to reproduce in a flat photograph. For jackets, bags or frequently washed items, 40 wt polyester thread is more resistant to abrasion and repeated laundering.

  • Use a new 75/11 sharp embroidery needle for medium linen or cotton.
  • Use an 80/12 sharp needle for dense denim or heavy canvas.
  • Hoop the fabric and stabilizer together whenever the project construction allows it.
  • Run a placement template before embroidering a jacket back or completed tote.
  • Begin at approximately 550–650 stitches per minute and reduce the speed if the thread starts shredding or the fabric moves with the needle.
  • Do not pull the fabric drum-tight. It should be flat and secure without distorting the grain.
  • If temporary spray adhesive is required, spray it onto the stabilizer inside a cardboard box and allow the solvent to disperse before attaching the fabric.

Because the design contains from 40588 to 68215 stitches, a test stitch on the same fabric and stabilizer combination is strongly recommended. Check the reverse side after the foliage has stitched: if the fabric begins to tunnel or the stabilizer separates from it, stop before the dense flower section and improve the support.
