Design Specifications

Product detail Exact specification
Unique thread colors 7 Madeira Classic Rayon No. 40 colors
Programmed sequence 11 numbered entries in the supplied technical map
Approximate upper-thread use 129.74 m according to the supplied technical map
Embroidery type Conventional flat machine embroidery; not appliqué, FSL or an in-the-hoop project

The technical map displays a rounded stitch total of 29800. This page retains the product-file count of 29763; a small variation can also appear when embroidery software recalculates commands for a particular format.

What the Design Depicts

A black swan and a white swan face each other with their curved necks forming a heart. A large red heart fills the background, while mirrored stitches below the birds create the appearance of a reflection on water. The contrast between dark feathers, white plumage, warm beaks and the red background makes the motif readable from a distance.

This composition is suitable for wedding and anniversary cushions, ceremonial towels, table runners, framed textile panels and personalized gifts for a couple. The motif can also be used for Valentine’s Day projects without wedding lettering.

Hoop Compatibility and Clearance

Usable embroidery field Fit Technical note
100x100 mm (4x4) No The design is larger in both directions.
100x170 mm (4x6.69") No The 121.4 mm side exceeds the 100 mm field by 21.4 mm.
130x180 mm, commonly called 5x7 Yes Leaves 8.6 mm total clearance across the 130 mm direction and 20.0 mm total clearance across the 180 mm direction.
140x200 mm and larger Yes Provides more clearance around the supplied file.

Before stitching: check the machine’s actual embroidery field, center the file and run the boundary trace. On a 130x180 mm field, the 121.4 mm side leaves only 4.3 mm per side when perfectly centered.

Madeira Classic Rayon No. 40 Color Chart

The supplied technical map uses seven Madeira colors in eleven numbered sequence entries. Three colors return later in the file so that highlights and small details stitch above earlier fills. Keep the programmed order and do not use automatic color sorting.

Color Madeira number Official shade name What it stitches in the design
1146 Tomato Red Main red heart and the final red finishing accent
1018 Light Salmon Warm reflected areas beneath the swans
1004 Natural White White swan, pale reflection and later white highlights
1009 Sapphire Black Black swan, dark feathers and principal dark contours
1181 Candy Apple Red Deeper red central accent between the birds
1021 Rust Beaks and repeated warm facial details
1258 Grizzley Bear Dark brown beak and eye shading

Programmed sequence: 1146 → 1018 → 1004 → 1009 → 1181 → 1004 → 1021 → 1258 → 1004 → 1021 → 1146.

Do not merge repeated colors. Madeira 1004, 1021 and 1146 return at later stages to place highlights and small details over previously stitched areas.

The HTML squares are approximate screen representations. Monitor settings cannot reproduce rayon thread exactly, so select thread by Madeira number rather than by the displayed square.

Retail Madeira Stabilizers for Home Embroidery

Fabric or project Madeira stabilizer underneath Material on top
Medium or heavyweight linen, cotton twill or canvas Madeira Super Strong cut-away, 80 g/m², retail roll 30 cm x 5 m Not required on a smooth surface
Firm, tightly woven fabric after a successful test stitch Madeira Cotton Soft tear-away; use enough support to prevent movement during the 29763-stitch design Not required on a smooth surface
Terry wedding or anniversary towel Madeira Super Strong cut-away for permanent support Madeira Avalon Film water-soluble film over the pile
Dense sweatshirt fabric or stable fleece Madeira Super Strong cut-away Madeira Avalon Film when the surface has pile or texture
Finished item that cannot be hooped conventionally Madeira Cotton Fix self-adhesive tear-away for positioning, with Madeira Super Strong placed beneath the item for structural support Madeira Avalon Film only on terry or textured fabric

This is a relatively dense, large motif. Madeira Super Strong is the safer base for linen, towels and other projects where the finished embroidery must remain flat after washing. Madeira Cotton Soft is suitable only when the base fabric itself is stable and a test sample confirms that the heart fill does not pucker.

On terry cloth, hoop the backing, towel and Avalon Film together without stretching the towel. The film holds loops below the satin and fill stitches so the feather contours, eyes and beaks remain visible.

More technical guidance: Madeira Cotton Soft tear-away, Madeira Super Strong cut-away, Madeira Avalon water-soluble stabilizers and the stabilizer selection guide.

Needle, Speed and Stitch Registration

  • use Madeira Classic Rayon No. 40 or another standard No. 40 machine embroidery thread;
  • start with a new 75/11 embroidery needle on medium-weight linen or cotton; test an 80/12 sharp needle on tightly woven heavyweight linen;
  • begin at approximately 600–700 stitches per minute and reduce the speed if the feather outlines shift over the filled areas;
  • press and pre-shrink washable linen, cotton or towels before hooping;
  • support the free portion of a towel, runner or cushion panel so its weight cannot pull against the embroidery carriage;
  • run a complete test with the same fabric, backing, topping, needle and thread planned for the finished item.

Do not substitute metallic thread for all seven colors. The dense fills and repeated fine feather details are digitized for standard No. 40 embroidery thread. A metallic accent may be tested in one small block, but it can require a larger metallic needle, slower speed and tension adjustment.

Project Ideas and Placement

  • center of a wedding or anniversary cushion;
  • lower end of a ceremonial or personalized towel;
  • center panel of a table runner;
  • framed textile picture for a newlywed couple;
  • guest-book cover or keepsake album cover;
  • large tote or gift-bag panel;
  • Valentine’s Day home decor without additional lettering.

Existing buyer reviews mention successful stitch-outs on a pillow and on a cushion made for a silver wedding anniversary. These are practical placements because the 121.4x160.0 mm motif has enough room to show the feather detail and mirrored reflection clearly.

Matching Wedding and Swan Designs

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this swan design fit a 130x180 mm hoop?

Yes. The supplied file is 121.4x160.0 mm, so it fits a true 130x180 mm embroidery field. When centered, it leaves 4.3 mm on each side of the 130 mm direction and 10.0 mm on each side of the 180 mm direction.

Can I stitch it in a 100x170 mm hoop?

No. One side of the design is 121.4 mm, which exceeds a 100 mm embroidery field by 21.4 mm. Rotating the file does not solve the width limitation.

Why are some Madeira colors repeated in the sequence?

Madeira 1004, 1021 and 1146 stitch at more than one stage so highlights, beak details and final accents sit above earlier fills. Keep all eleven numbered sequence entries and do not use automatic color sorting.

Which stabilizers should I use on a terry towel?

Use Madeira Super Strong cut-away underneath for permanent support and Madeira Avalon Film water-soluble topping over the pile. Pre-wash the towel, hoop it without stretching and test the full design before stitching the final item.

How should I wash an item embroidered with this design?

Follow the base fabric’s care label, use a mild detergent without chlorine bleach and avoid wringing the embroidered area. Dry the item flat or as the fabric allows, then press from the reverse over a soft towel so the feather texture is not flattened.
