Art Deco Labyrinth Geometric Quilt Block is a dense one-color machine embroidery design built from a continuous square spiral. Parallel lines and right angles create visual depth, leading the eye toward the center like a graphic maze.

Design Size, Stitch Count and Hoop Requirements

This design does not fit a 130 × 180 mm / 5 × 7 inch hoop or a standard 160 × 260 mm / 6.3 × 10.24 inch embroidery field: the design is 166.1 mm wide. Check the machine's actual sewing field, not only the commercial hoop name. Load the required format and trace the design boundary before stitching.

How to Build a Geometric Pillow from Repeated Blocks

The download contains one square spiral. Repeat the block at its original size to create a larger composition. Change the thread shade from one block to another to turn the one-color file into a multicolor mosaic.

A 3 × 3 layout produces an embroidered field of approximately 49.83 × 50.13 cm / 19.62 × 19.74 inches, close to the center of a 50 × 50 cm pillow. These dimensions do not include gaps or seams. The finished size depends on the stitching line, seam allowance, border and piping.

Home Embroidery Machine: Stitch Separate Blocks

1. Cut fabric blanks with at least 20–25 mm / 0.8–1 inch of extra fabric around the design.
2. Mark the center, vertical axis and horizontal axis on every blank.
3. Hoop the fabric with cutaway stabilizer and stitch one complete test block.
4. Measure the relaxed sample, then make one trimming template for every block.
5. Join the horizontal rows first, aligning the outer spiral lines, then join the rows.
6. Add the border, piping and pillow back using your preferred sewing method.

Do not trim all fabric squares to their final size before embroidery. Dense, long stitch paths can draw the fabric inward slightly, so accurate squaring is safer after every block has been embroidered.

Professional Machine: Combine Copies in Embroidery Software

Copies may be combined in embroidery software if the machine supports the final dimensions and stitch count. A 3 × 3 matrix measures 498.3 × 501.3 mm and contains 324,153 stitches. It does not fit a frame exactly 500 × 500 mm, because its height exceeds 500 mm by 1.3 mm. Check the frame limits, maximum stitch count, connections between blocks and sewing order before transferring the merged file.

Madeira Thread Color and Estimated Consumption

The RPE-157 color chart shows one color and no thread changes. The original shade is Madeira Classic Rayon 40 No. 1340. Screen colors are approximate, so use a physical Madeira thread chart when an exact match matters.

The chart estimates approximately 148.08 m / 162 yd of upper thread for one block. Nine blocks require about 1,332.72 m / 1,457 yd before test stitching, trimming and spool reserve. For a one-color 3 × 3 composition, prepare at least 1,500 m / 1,640 yd. For a multicolor pillow, divide the requirement among the selected shades according to the number of blocks in each color.

Fabric, Stabilizer, Needle and Machine Speed

• Fabric: tightly woven cotton, linen, gabardine or stable home-decor fabric. Loose or stretchy fabric can distort the right angles.
• Stabilizer: use a medium-weight cutaway stabilizer. It supports the dense geometry more reliably than tear-away and remains under the stitches after assembly.
• Hooping: hoop the fabric and stabilizer together without stretching the fabric. Temporary spray adhesive may be used between the layers when needed.
• Needle: begin with a new 75/11 embroidery needle for 40-weight rayon thread; test an 80/12 needle on heavier home-decor fabric.
• Speed: begin around 500–600 stitches per minute. Slower stitching can help maintain clean edges and even line width along the long parallel paths.

The essential test is not only puckering but also geometry after unhooping. Measure both sides of the relaxed sample and check the right angles. A small distortion becomes much more visible when several squares meet.

Why This Design Is Art Deco, a Labyrinth and an Optical Illusion

The square spiral belongs to geometric abstraction and creates an optical effect through repeated parallel paths. Strong symmetry, stepped rhythm, contrast and the metallic effect of gold or bronze thread give the motif its Art Deco character. Does this design fit a 5x7 hoop?

No. A 130 × 180 mm / 5 × 7 inch field is too narrow for the 166.1 mm width.

Does it fit a 160 × 260 mm hoop?

No. The hoop is tall enough, but the design is 6.1 mm wider than a 160 mm field. Use a hoop with an actual field of at least 166.1 × 167.1 mm, such as 180 × 300 or 200 × 200 mm.

Why do the photos show several colors if the file is one-color?

Each block is stitched in one color. For a multicolor composition, change the thread shade between separate blocks—for example, alternate gold, bronze, copper and a dark contrast color.

Can I make a pillow approximately 50 × 50 cm?

Yes. Nine blocks in a 3 × 3 layout produce an area of about 49.83 × 50.13 cm / 19.62 × 19.74 inches without gaps. Allow for seams when assembling separate blocks. A merged file requires a frame taller than 500 mm.

Is this an ITH pillow or quilt block?

No. The file contains decorative embroidery only. It does not include fabric placement, tacking, trimming, zipper or automatic in-the-hoop assembly steps.

Can I reduce the file to 160 mm directly on my machine?

Routine on-machine reduction is not recommended if the machine changes only the coordinates while keeping the original stitch count. Narrower parallel paths increase density and can damage the geometry. If you need another size, read the design resize service instructions first.
