Zombie Sleep Mask Project Ideas

The finished mask can be used as a playful sleep mask or as part of a Halloween costume. Its exaggerated eyes, turquoise skin, exposed-brain marks and stitched scars read clearly in photographs, so it also works for themed parties, sleepovers, trick-or-treat outfits and handmade gift sets.

Use the smallest file for a child after checking the printed template against the wearer’s face. The middle size suits many teenagers and smaller adults, while the largest file provides broader coverage for adults. Print the selected template at 100% scale and check the mask width, nose bridge and strap positions before cutting fabric. Do not resize the ITH file because the seam allowance, strap placement and joining contour are part of its construction.

How to Assemble the ITH Sleep Mask

1. Unzip the archive and select the required size and machine format.
2. Hoop the stabilized front fabric and stitch the zombie face in the programmed color-block order.
3. Stop before the final joining contour. Position the ties or soft elastic at the side marks and keep their loose lengths inside the mask, away from the stitch path.
4. Place the backing fabric over the embroidered front with right sides together, then stitch the final contour.
5. Remove the project from the hoop, trim the seam allowance, turn the mask right side out and close the opening with a ladder stitch.

Madeira Classic 40 Thread Chart

The original chart specifies 14 Madeira Classic 40 colors. All three sizes use the same palette and the same sequence of 17 stitching blocks.

Color-block sequence: 1362 → 1084 → 1072 → 1172 → 1023 → 1066 → 1142 → 1292 → 1298 → 1291 → 1175 → 1354 → 1362 → 1234 → 1004 → 1354 → 1362.

The Madeira numbers come from the original color chart. Do not automatically combine the repeated 1362 and 1354 blocks: each return performs a later detail or construction step, and the final 1362 block closes the mask. For Sulky, Isacord, Brother and other brands, use the Royal Present thread converter. Conversion gives the nearest available shade, not a guaranteed exact match.

Stabilizer and Material Recommendations

Embroidered front. Use tightly woven cotton, cotton twill or a stable blend around 120–180 g/m² (3.5–5.3 oz/yd²). The design contains approximately 43,000–57,000 stitches, so loose or very lightweight fabric can distort under the filled areas.

Stabilizer. Use a soft cut-away stabilizer around 40–60 g/m² (1.2–1.8 oz/yd²). It supports the dense embroidery and remains enclosed inside the finished mask. Avoid a stiff heavy stabilizer that would make the mask uncomfortable against the face.

Backing against the face. Choose smooth cotton batiste, cotton poplin or washable satin around 80–120 g/m² (2.4–3.5 oz/yd²). Prewash cotton fabrics if the finished mask will be washed.

Strap or ties. Use soft elastic 6–10 mm (1/4–3/8") wide or fabric ties. Before the final contour, secure the loose lengths inside the mask with short pieces of low-tack tape placed away from the stitch path.

Needle and thread. Use a fresh Embroidery 75/11 needle for poplin or 80/12 for heavier twill with standard 40-weight polyester embroidery thread. Reduce speed over the dense fills if the fabric begins to shift.
