Five Gold Rings is a digital machine embroidery design for a flat, shaped Christmas ornament made in the hoop. Five interlaced gold rings cross a flowing red ribbon, while a small evergreen flourish anchors the composition at the lower edge.
The design represents the fifth gift in The Twelve Days of Christmas. Placement, front-piece tackdown, decorative embroidery and final assembly are programmed into each file. The finished ornament has an exposed felt edge and does not need turning or stuffing.

How to Assemble the Ornament
Print the supplied outline at 100% or Actual Size and cut two matching pieces from firm, non-fraying craft felt. Hoop one layer of tear-away stabilizer, run the placement line, then position and secure the front piece.

Madeira Classic 40 Color Sequence
RPE-3797-fr5 uses 8 shades across 9 programmed blocks. Madeira 1006 appears in blocks 5 and 8. The first black stop separates the ring overlaps; the second completes the outlines after the gold scroll and green branch have stitched. Keep both stops in their original positions.

Madeira Classic rayon already gives the rings a polished, jewelry-like sheen, so metallic thread is optional rather than required. For block 9, use bobbin thread close to 1071 because the joining seam remains visible on the back.

Three Felt Palettes for the Gold Rings
Choose a stable, sewable felt that keeps the gold rings separate from the background. Fine glitter felt can add sparkle, but the glitter should be flat and firmly bonded rather than chunky or loose.

Test glitter felt with a short stitched sample before starting the ornament. A suitable sheet stays flexible, does not split around needle holes and leaves no hard particles on the needle. Avoid adhesive-backed craft sheets and glitter EVA foam.
Tips for Clean Interlaced Rings
- Keep blocks 4–8 in sequence. The over-and-under effect depends on gold stitching, black separators and the final black definition occurring in the programmed order.
- Before block 4, test upper-thread tension on a felt scrap. Bobbin thread should not show inside the satin rings.
- Use a steady medium machine speed through the tight ring curves; extremely slow stitching is unnecessary on firm craft felt.
- Do not trim jump stitches across the ring group until the machine has completed that color stop and the hoop is stationary.
- Remove the tear-away before using pinking shears, then keep an even margin outside the final assembly seam.
The Fifth Day of Christmas
Five Gold Rings is the fifth gift named in The Twelve Days of Christmas. Here the rings are gathered by a red ribbon and balanced by a small evergreen flourish, giving the traditional lyric a compact baroque ornament format.

Do I need metallic thread?
No. Madeira Classic 1159 and 1352 provide two warm gold shades with natural rayon shine. Metallic thread is optional and would require separate tension testing.

When do I add the backing and ribbon?
Add them after black block 8 and before block 9. The final Baby's Breath seam secures both felt pieces and the ribbon ends.
Does the ornament need turning or stuffing?
No. It is a flat raw-edge ITH project assembled directly in the hoop.
