Five Gold Rings is a digital machine embroidery design for a flat, shaped Christmas ornament made in the hoop. Five interlaced gold rings cross a flowing red ribbon, while a small evergreen flourish anchors the composition at the lower edge.
The design represents the fifth gift in The Twelve Days of Christmas. Placement, front-piece tackdown, decorative embroidery and final assembly are programmed into each file. The finished ornament has an exposed felt edge and does not need turning or stuffing.

Print the supplied outline at 100% or Actual Size and cut two matching pieces from firm, non-fraying craft felt. Hoop one layer of tear-away stabilizer, run the placement line, then position and secure the front piece.

| Stage | Action | Check |
|---|---|---|
| Block 1 | Stitch the shaped placement line on the stabilizer. | The complete outline sits inside the hoop. |
| Block 2 | Cover the guide with the front felt piece and run the tackdown. | The shaped margin is even and the felt stays flat. |
| Blocks 3–8 | Stitch the red ribbon, five rings, overlap separators, gold scroll, greenery and black definition in the saved order. | Each ring reads as a separate interlaced form. |
| Before block 9 | Tape a folded hanging ribbon and the back felt piece to the reverse of the hoop. | Both ribbon ends cross the seam; the loop stays clear of the needle. |
| Block 9 | Run the final assembly outline, remove the project and trim the exposed edge. | Front, back and hanging loop are joined. |
RPE-3797-fr5 uses 8 shades across 9 programmed blocks. Madeira 1006 appears in blocks 5 and 8. The first black stop separates the ring overlaps; the second completes the outlines after the gold scroll and green branch have stitched. Keep both stops in their original positions.
| Block | Color | Madeira Classic 40 | Stitched element |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 1103 — Hunter Green | Shaped placement line | |
| 2 | 1004 — Natural White | Front-piece tackdown | |
| 3 | 1037 — Tango Red | Ribbon crossing the rings | |
| 4 | 1159 — Antique Gold | Five gold rings | |
| 5 | 1006 — Diamond Black | Ring-overlap separators | |
| 6 | 1352 — Old Gold | Lower gold scroll | |
| 7 | 1170 — Fern Green | Evergreen branch and curls | |
| 8 | 1006 — Diamond Black, repeat | Final outlines of rings, ribbon and foliage | |
| 9 | 1071 — Baby's Breath | Final seam, backing and ribbon loop |
Madeira Classic rayon already gives the rings a polished, jewelry-like sheen, so metallic thread is optional rather than required. For block 9, use bobbin thread close to 1071 because the joining seam remains visible on the back.
| Supply | Recommended choice | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Felt | Two pieces of firm polyester craft felt, 1–1.5 mm thick | Holds the scalloped shape and does not fray. |
| Stabilizer | Sulky Tear-Easy, OESD Medium Weight TearAway or Madeira Cotton Soft 50 g/m² | Retail-size tear-away options for home embroidery machines. |
| Needle | Fresh 75/11 embroidery needle | Passes cleanly through felt and stabilizer. |
| Upper thread | Madeira Classic 40 or quality 40-weight polyester embroidery thread | Matches the original stitch density. |
| Temporary hold | Small pieces of painter's tape or embroidery-safe temporary adhesive | Keeps felt and ribbon ends away from the needle path. |
| Hanging loop | 15–20 cm (6–8") of narrow satin or grosgrain ribbon | Forms the integrated loop for the tree. |
Choose a stable, sewable felt that keeps the gold rings separate from the background. Fine glitter felt can add sparkle, but the glitter should be flat and firmly bonded rather than chunky or loose.
| Look | Front | Back | Effect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Champagne light | ✦Ivory felt with fine gold glitter | Matte burgundy felt | A pale front keeps the black ring definition clear; the back echoes the red ribbon. |
| Evergreen contrast | Deep green matte felt | ✦Old-gold glitter felt | The rings and red ribbon stand out strongly against a tree-colored ground. |
| Midnight sapphire | Dark blue matte felt | ✦Light champagne glitter felt | Cool blue makes the two gold shades look richer without competing with the greenery. |
Test glitter felt with a short stitched sample before starting the ornament. A suitable sheet stays flexible, does not split around needle holes and leaves no hard particles on the needle. Avoid adhesive-backed craft sheets and glitter EVA foam.
Five Gold Rings is the fifth gift named in The Twelve Days of Christmas. Here the rings are gathered by a red ribbon and balanced by a small evergreen flourish, giving the traditional lyric a compact baroque ornament format.
Use the finished piece on a Christmas tree, wreath or garland, as a textile gift tag, or as one chapter in a complete twelve-ornament display.
After purchase, download and extract the ZIP archive, then transfer only the required size and compatible format to your embroidery machine. Compare both dimensions with the usable field of your hoop before stitching.
You may sell finished physical ornaments made with this design in small quantities. The digital files and templates may not be resold, copied, shared, gifted, exchanged or redistributed.
The 78.7x78.0 mm (3.10x3.07") file fits an 80x80 mm (3x3") hoop or larger. The other two sizes require a 100x100 mm (4x4") hoop or larger.

No. Madeira Classic 1159 and 1352 provide two warm gold shades with natural rayon shine. Metallic thread is optional and would require separate tension testing.
Use firm, evenly made polyester craft felt 1–1.5 mm thick. Matte felt or sewable fine-glitter felt works; avoid adhesive-backed sheets, soft loose felt and EVA foam.
Add them after black block 8 and before block 9. The final Baby's Breath seam secures both felt pieces and the ribbon ends.
No. It is a flat raw-edge ITH project assembled directly in the hoop.
