Frequently asked questions
Which files fit a 3x3 hoop, and which need a 4x4 hoop?
The first three files, from 58.3x56.0 to 70.6x67.6 mm, fit a 3x3 inch hoop. Choose a 4x4 inch hoop from 77.7x74.4 mm upward. An 80x80 mm hoop frame does not equal every machine’s usable embroidery field, so keep a real margin and run the trace function before stitching.
How should I position this small scene on a child’s sweatshirt?
Wash and dry the sweatshirt first so any shrinkage happens before embroidery. Print the chosen file at 100% scale, test the placement, then mark the center and both axes. Turn the garment inside out, secure a medium cut-away backing such as Gunold Stiffy 2040 Cut Away with Gunold KK 100, hoop without stretching the knit, and clip excess fabric away from the needle area.
How can I stitch on velvet or velour without hoop marks?
Hoop a medium cut-away backing rather than the pile fabric. Apply a light coat of Gunold KK 100 to the backing, smooth the velvet on top, add a light water-soluble topper such as Sulky Solvy, and baste the layers before stitching. Trim the backing from the reverse after embroidery and remove the topper from the face.
How do I remove a hoop mark from linen, terry cloth or knit?
Do not leave the item tightened in the hoop before or after stitching. On cotton, terry cloth and sweatshirting, a normal wash and dry following the fabric care label usually removes the mark; linen often responds to gentle washing and pressing. For velvet and other pile fabrics, float the fabric on hooped backing from the start instead of hooping the fabric itself.
