Sunflower Petals Placemat Mega ITH Machine Embroidery Design is an in-the-hoop project for creating a finished flower-shaped table mat in one hooping. The radiating petals and dotted center form a stylized sunflower, while the visible fabric inside the petals allows you to adapt the design to different table settings and color schemes.

The set includes eight ready-sized files for large and Mega embroidery hoops. The front, backing and finished decorative edge are assembled during the embroidery process. A separate sewing machine is not required, but the front and backing fabrics must be trimmed close to the stitched outline before the final embroidery step.

This product contains digital files for computerized embroidery machines. Fabric, thread, stabilizer, tableware and the finished placemat are not included.

Important: compare the exact dimensions of the selected file with the usable embroidery field of your machine. The nominal hoop name and the actual stitching area are not always the same.

What is included

  • 8 finished-size placemat files;
  • multiple popular embroidery-machine formats;
  • a color chart with the embroidery sequence;
  • step-by-step PDF instructions.

Thread chart and embroidery sequence

Thread chart: Madeira Classic
Color blocks: 4
Thread changes: 3
Color sequence: 1145, 1223, 1378, 1359

  1. Madeira Classic 1145 — dotted sunflower center.
  2. Madeira Classic 1223 — radiating decorative details inside the petals.
  3. Madeira Classic 1378 — technical construction outline used when attaching the backing fabric. For this step, use a thread color that coordinates with the fabric.
  4. Madeira Classic 1359 — final embroidered outlines around the petals and outer edge.

The thread chart for the 191.9 x 191.2 mm file indicates approximately 118.69 m of thread. Larger sizes will require more thread.

The Madeira numbers are color references, not mandatory thread choices. You may replace them with equivalent colors from another brand. Keep enough contrast between the dotted center, inner petal details and the main fabric.

Recommended materials

  • prewashed stable woven fabric for the front;
  • prewashed coordinating fabric for the back;
  • two layers of tear-away stabilizer;
  • temporary embroidery adhesive spray;
  • machine embroidery thread;
  • coordinating bobbin thread for a neat reverse side;
  • sharp appliqué scissors for close trimming.

Cotton, linen and stable cotton-blend fabrics are suitable choices. Avoid untreated stretch fabric because it can distort the petal outlines and affect the final edge.

Prewash both the front and backing fabrics before embroidery. If one layer shrinks after washing and the other does not, the finished placemat may become wavy or distorted.

How to make the placemat

  1. Place two layers of tear-away stabilizer together.
  2. Lightly spray the top layer with temporary adhesive and place the front fabric over it.
  3. Hoop the stabilizer and front fabric securely without stretching the fabric.
  4. Start the embroidery and complete the decorative center and inner petal details.
  5. When the machine begins the technical outline shown in red in the instructions, stop the machine.
  6. Remove the hoop from the machine without unhooping or shifting the project.
  7. Turn the hoop over and secure the backing fabric to the reverse side with temporary adhesive.
  8. Return the hoop to the machine and continue stitching the construction outline with a thread that coordinates with the fabric.
  9. Remove the hoop again and trim the front and backing fabrics close to the stitched outline.
  10. Return the hoop to the machine and complete the final decorative edge.
  11. Remove the project from the hoop and tear away the excess stabilizer outside the finished edge.

The stabilizer enclosed between the front and backing remains inside the placemat and helps support its shape. Only the excess stabilizer around the finished outer edge is removed.

Choosing the correct hoop

The smallest included file measures 191.9 x 191.2 mm, so this set is not intended for 4x4 or 5x7 hoops. The largest file requires an embroidery field of at least 398.4 x 396.9 mm.

Check both dimensions because a machine may support the selected width but not the required height. A machine format such as PES or JEF does not guarantee that the machine has a sufficiently large embroidery field.

Do not choose a file based only on the advertised hoop name. Open the file in your embroidery software and compare its exact measurements with the usable field specified for your machine and hoop.

Color and project ideas

Use yellow, golden or ochre fabric for a traditional sunflower appearance. Cream or white fabric creates a daisy-inspired placemat, while rust, brown and deep orange shades work well for autumn and Thanksgiving table settings.

The different sizes can be used as individual placemats, decorative mats beneath serving bowls, table centerpieces or coordinated handmade gifts. For a matching set, use the same front fabric and thread colors while changing the backing fabric for each place setting.

Frequently asked questions

Is this a finished sunflower placemat?

No. This listing contains downloadable digital embroidery-machine files. No physical materials or finished products are shipped.

Is the placemat made entirely in the hoop?

Yes. The front, backing and finished edge are assembled in one hooping. No separate sewing-machine assembly is required. You will need to stop the embroidery, attach the backing and trim both fabric layers before the final edge is stitched.

Will the design fit a 4x4 or 5x7 hoop?

No. The smallest file measures 191.9 x 191.2 mm. Choose this set only if your machine and hoop provide a sufficiently large square embroidery field.

Does the smallest file fit every 200x200 mm hoop?

Not automatically. The machine must have a usable embroidery field of at least 191.9 x 191.2 mm. Some hoops sold as 200x200 mm have a smaller permitted stitching area, so check your machine manual or embroidery software.

Is batting required?

No. The supplied instructions use two layers of tear-away stabilizer and do not require batting. Adding batting will change the thickness and may affect the final satin edge, so any modified construction should be tested before making a complete set.

Why does part of the stabilizer remain inside?

The stabilizer between the front and backing supports the placemat and helps it retain its shape. After embroidery, tear away only the excess stabilizer outside the finished edge.

Do I need to prewash the fabric?

Yes. Prewashing is recommended because the placemat combines two fabric layers with dense embroidered outlines. Shrinkage after completion may cause puckering, curling or an uneven edge.

What does the red outline in the instructions mean?

It identifies the construction stage at which the machine must be stopped so the backing fabric can be attached. It is not necessary to use bright red thread. Select a thread that coordinates with your fabric.

Can I change the Madeira colors?

Yes. The listed Madeira Classic numbers are a reference palette. Colors can be adapted to the fabric, tableware or season. Preserve visible contrast between the center, inner petal details and the surrounding fabric.

How can I keep the reverse side neat?

Use a clean piece of backing fabric, secure it smoothly without wrinkles and select coordinating upper and bobbin threads for the visible finishing stages. Trim the backing close to the construction outline without cutting the stitches.

Can I resize the files?

Significant resizing is not recommended. This ITH project contains construction outlines and a finished satin edge calculated for specific dimensions. Reducing or enlarging the file may change stitch density, edge coverage and alignment. Use one of the eight supplied sizes whenever possible.

Can I use the design on a multi-needle machine?

Yes, if the machine supports one of the included formats and has a large enough embroidery field. When attaching fabric beneath the hoop, make sure the fabric is secured and cannot catch on the machine or hoop mechanism.

Can I sell finished placemats?

Yes. Finished items may be sold under the Royal Present Embroidery standard license as part of a small handmade business. Industrial or factory production is prohibited. Digital files may not be copied, shared, transferred or resold. See the license and terms of use.

Which file should I transfer to my machine?

Unzip the downloaded archive first. Select only the required size and the format supported by your embroidery machine. If you are unsure which extension your machine reads, use the embroidery machine file formats guide.
