This one-color smiling skull machine embroidery design features bold tattoo-style linework and a dramatic toothy grin. Its vertical shape works well on the center chest of a hoodie or sweatshirt, the back of a denim or biker jacket, a large backpack flap, a canvas bag, gothic home decor and Halloween clothing. Black thread forms the skull outline, eye sockets, nasal cavity, teeth and shaded facial details without additional color changes.

Where to embroider the smiling skull

Place the design vertically in the center of an adult hoodie or sweatshirt. The larger sizes make a strong back design for denim jackets, motorcycle vests, stagewear and alternative streetwear. The smaller version can decorate a backpack flap, canvas tote or a separate piece of twill or felt that is later sewn onto the garment as a patch.

Black embroidery creates strong contrast on yellow, white, red, stone and light gray fabric. For a black hoodie, replace black with ivory, silver gray, burgundy or neon thread. Always test the alternative color on the actual fabric because high-contrast linework makes fabric movement and registration problems easier to see.

Color chart

Order Color Thread Color name Embroidered area
1
Madeira Classic No. 1006 Diamond Black Entire design: skull outline, eye sockets, nasal cavity, cheek areas, teeth and black shading.

The original color chart contains one thread color. Madeira Classic No. 1006 is a lustrous 40-weight viscose rayon embroidery thread. For jackets, backpacks and frequently washed clothing, black Madeira Polyneon 40 polyester thread is a more durable alternative. Color numbers are not interchangeable between thread collections, so select the Polyneon shade using a physical color card.

Stabilizer recommendations

Material Stabilizer How to use it
Hoodie, sweatshirt knit or jersey Madeira Super Strong cut-away, 2.36 oz/yd² Provides permanent support. After embroidery, trim the stabilizer approximately 3/8 inch from the design.
Denim, twill or firm cotton Madeira Cotton Stable fusible tear-away, 1.47 oz/yd² Fuse it to the wrong side before hooping. Use Super Strong cut-away for the largest size or clothing that will be washed frequently.
Backpack or item that cannot be hooped Madeira Cotton Fix self-adhesive tear-away, 1.47 oz/yd² Hoop the stabilizer with the paper side facing up, remove the release paper and press the item onto the exposed adhesive area.
Fleece or fabric with a raised surface Super Strong 2.36 oz/yd² underneath and Madeira Avalon Film 1.2 mil on top The water-soluble topping prevents the skull details and teeth from sinking into the fabric surface.

Machine embroidery tips

Use a 75/11 embroidery needle with standard 40-weight rayon or polyester thread. An 80/12 needle may be more suitable for heavy denim or thick sweatshirt fleece. Hoop knit fabric without stretching it. When stretched fabric relaxes after unhooping, it can create ripples around the embroidery.

Begin at approximately 550–700 stitches per minute. Reduce the speed if the machine vibrates, the thread breaks or the design contains rapid direction changes. Print a full-size template before hooping and check its position against the pocket, zipper, hood and garment seams.

Stable woven fabric still requires backing. The tall design creates directional pull that can distort unsupported denim, canvas or cotton. Do not resize the design by more than approximately 5–10% without stitch recalculation because simple scaling changes satin-column width, stitch length and fill density.

If temporary spray adhesive is required, apply a very light layer to the stabilizer away from the embroidery machine. Excess adhesive can collect on the needle, presser foot and hook area. Always complete a full test stitch using the same fabric, thread, needle and stabilizer planned for the final item.
