Question:

How should I embroider the design "Vintage Frame with Bee" on heavy upholstery linen?

Answer:

When embroidering on heavy upholstery linen, especially textured fabrics, it’s important to choose the right stabilizers, needle, and attachment method to prevent the stitches from sinking and the fabric from shifting.

Recommendations:

Stabilizers:

  • Tear-away stabilizer, medium or heavy weight, under the fabric:

    • Example: Madeira Cotton Stable (50 g/m² or ~1.5 oz/yd²) or Gunold Easy Tear (50 g/m² or ~1.5 oz/yd²). These stabilizers provide solid support and prevent fabric movement.
  • Water-soluble topping on top:

    • To prevent stitches from sinking into the textured surface of the linen, use a water-soluble topping such as Madeira Avalon Film. This creates a smooth surface for the stitches and ensures clarity in the embroidery.

Needle:

  • The needle choice depends on the density and texture of the linen:

    • For less dense, smooth linen, use a 75/11 needle.
    • For heavier and coarser linen, use a 90/14 needle.
  • It’s recommended to test on a small section of fabric to determine the best needle for your specific material.

Temporary adhesive spray:

  • If the linen is thick or difficult to hoop due to its texture, use a temporary adhesive spray such as Sulky KK 2000 or Gunold Spray Adhesive.

    • Spray the stabilizer, then carefully attach the fabric to it. This secures the fabric before embroidery, especially if hooping is challenging.

Hoopless embroidery method:

If the linen is too thick or stiff to be hooped, you can use the hoopless embroidery method:

  • Hoop only the stabilizer (for example, Madeira Cotton Stable).

  • Using temporary adhesive spray, attach the linen on top of the hooped stabilizer.

  • For extra security, use clips to hold the fabric edges around the hoop.

    • This method prevents puckering and stretching, common with thick fabrics.

"Sandwich" hooping method:

If the linen can be hooped, make a "sandwich":

  1. Place the tear-away stabilizer under the fabric.
  2. Position the fabric (linen) on top of the stabilizer.
  3. Add the water-soluble topping to prevent the stitches from sinking into the fibers.

Final steps:

  • Use a tear-away stabilizer medium or heavy weight under the fabric, such as Madeira Cotton Stable (50 g/m² or ~1.5 oz/yd²).
  • For textured linen, be sure to add a water-soluble topping like Madeira Avalon Film on top.
  • Choose the needle based on the fabric density and texture: 75/11 for lighter linen and 90/14 for thicker fabric.
  • If hooping is difficult, use temporary adhesive spray and the hoopless method.
  • When hooping, make a "sandwich": stabilizer – fabric – topping.

This approach will ensure high-quality embroidery on heavy textured upholstery linen for the "Vintage Frame with Bee" design, preventing stitches from sinking and keeping the fabric stable.
