This Poinsettia ITH Table Placemat Machine Embroidery Design creates a complete round Christmas placemat in one hooping. Eight layered red poinsettias, green leaves and berry sprigs form a floral wreath around the open center, while cream and red satin borders finish the scalloped edge.

The two supplied files are intended for industrial or multi-needle embroidery machines with very large square embroidery fields. The finished placemat can be used under dinner plates, serving dishes and holiday table centerpieces.

The project is completed in the hoop without a separate sewing machine. Trimming is required: after the backing fabric is attached, both fabric layers must be cut close to the placement outline before the final satin borders are embroidered.

This is a digital product for computerized embroidery machines. No finished placemat, fabric, stabilizer, thread, plate or other physical item will be shipped. Both sizes are supplied together in one ZIP archive.

Hoop compatibility

Design size Minimum practical field Important note
344.6 x 344.6 mm
13.57 x 13.57 in
360 x 360 mm
14.17 x 14.17 in
A true 350 x 350 mm / 13.78 x 13.78 in field may accept the file, but it leaves only 5.4 mm of total clearance in each direction.
379.0 x 379.1 mm
14.92 x 14.93 in
400 x 400 mm
15.75 x 15.75 in
A 380 x 380 mm / 14.96 x 14.96 in field is theoretically large enough, but leaves only 0.9–1.0 mm of total clearance and is not practical for production.

Neither file fits a 300 x 300 mm / 11.81 x 11.81 in embroidery field. Check the exact usable field supported by the machine rather than the outside dimensions of the physical frame.

Materials required

  • stable woven cotton, linen, canvas or cotton-linen fabric for the front;
  • matching stable woven fabric for the back;
  • two layers of medium-weight tear-away stabilizer;
  • 40-weight machine embroidery thread;
  • bobbin thread suitable for the machine;
  • temporary embroidery adhesive spray;
  • small curved appliqué or embroidery scissors;
  • a sufficiently large industrial embroidery frame.

Prewash the front and backing fabrics together before cutting. This reduces the risk of the two layers shrinking differently after the finished placemat is washed.

ITH embroidery sequence

  1. Hoop the front fabric with two complete layers of medium-weight tear-away stabilizer. The stabilizer must extend securely beyond every side of the frame.
  2. Embroider the poinsettia wreath through the first five color blocks.
  3. Stop before the backing-attachment outline. Remove the hoop from the machine without unhooping the project.
  4. Turn the hoop over. Apply a light layer of temporary adhesive to the backing fabric and position it over the underside of the placemat. Place the wrong sides of the two fabrics together so the finished side of the backing remains visible.
  5. Return the hoop to the machine and embroider the attachment and cutting outline.
  6. Remove the hoop again without unhooping the project. Trim the front and backing fabrics close to the stitched outline. Do not cut the stabilizer or the attachment stitches.
  7. Return the hoop to the machine and embroider the cream and red satin finishing borders.
  8. Remove the completed placemat from the hoop and carefully tear away the excess stabilizer.

Madeira Classic Rayon reference sequence

The published technical sheet uses Madeira Classic Rayon No. 40. Tomato Red No. 1146 appears twice because it stitches both floral details and the final red border.

Block Madeira Classic Shade What it stitches
1 1369 Fresh Pine green leaves, stems and foliage throughout the wreath
2 1039 Brick Red dark poinsettia petals and the deepest floral shadows
3 1146 Tomato Red main red petals, berry details and middle floral layers
4 1378 Paprika warm highlights on the poinsettia petals and bright berry accents
5 1180 Daffodil golden-yellow poinsettia centers
6 1087 Silver Birch backing-attachment and fabric-cutting outline
7 1003 Cream White outer scalloped satin edge that covers the trimmed fabric
8 1146 Tomato Red inner red satin border around the complete placemat

Reference sequence: 1369, 1039, 1146, 1378, 1180, 1087, 1003, 1146.

The attachment outline is later covered by the satin borders, so its visible shade is less important than the construction sequence. Do not skip, reorder or combine the final three ITH blocks.

Equivalent shades from polyester and other embroidery-thread brands can be selected with the free Madeira thread converter. For frequently washed table linens, a comparable 40-weight polyester thread offers greater wash and abrasion resistance than rayon.

Stabilizer, needle and bobbin recommendations

Use two layers of medium-weight tear-away stabilizer as specified in the construction instructions. Suitable examples include Madeira Cotton Soft 50 g/m² and Gunold STIFFY 1650 50 g/m². Rotate the second layer by 90 degrees to provide more even support in both directions.

Use a DBxK5 sharp-point industrial embroidery needle No. 75/11 for medium-weight woven cotton or linen. A No. 80/12 needle may be tested on heavier canvas or densely woven table fabric. Use the needle system specified by the machine manufacturer.

The underside remains visible on the finished placemat. For the final cream and red satin borders, use matching bobbin thread or the same decorative thread in the bobbin when permitted by the machine. Test the tension first to prevent contrasting bobbin thread from showing along the finished edge.

Apply temporary adhesive lightly. Excess spray can transfer to the needle and cause skipped stitches, thread breaks or adhesive residue inside the machine.

Approximate embroidery time

At a constant machine speed of 700 stitches per minute, the listed stitch counts equal approximately:

  • 344.6 x 344.6 mm / 13.57 x 13.57 in: 137 minutes of needle time;
  • 379.0 x 379.1 mm / 14.92 x 14.93 in: 155 minutes of needle time.

Actual production time will be longer because the project requires thread changes, hoop removal, backing placement, trimming and final handling.

Christmas table-setting ideas

  • placemats under dinner plates or holiday chargers;
  • decorative mats under serving bowls and dessert stands;
  • Christmas breakfast and dinner table settings;
  • coordinated poinsettia table-linen collections;
  • seasonal textile displays for restaurants and small event businesses;
  • handmade Christmas home décor for small-business sales.

The open center keeps the plate stable and allows the floral wreath and scalloped border to remain visible around the place setting.

Frequently asked questions

Are both placemat sizes included?

Yes. The download contains both listed sizes in DST format. No size must be selected during checkout.

Will the design fit a 300 x 300 mm or 12 x 12 in hoop?

No. The smallest file measures 344.6 x 344.6 mm / 13.57 x 13.57 in and exceeds a 300 x 300 mm / 11.81 x 11.81 in embroidery field.

Can the larger file be used in a 380 x 380 mm frame?

Only if the machine provides the complete 380 x 380 mm / 14.96 x 14.96 in usable field and accepts a file measuring 379.0 x 379.1 mm. The remaining clearance is less than 1 mm in one direction, so a 400 x 400 mm / 15.75 x 15.75 in field is the practical choice.

Can this design be used on a home embroidery machine?

Only when the machine supports DST files and provides the required square embroidery field. Most ordinary single-needle home machines do not have a field large enough for either size.

Is trimming required?

Yes. After the backing fabric is secured by the attachment outline, trim both fabric layers close to the stitching. The final cream and red satin borders cover the raw edges.

Is a separate sewing machine required?

No. The embroidery machine attaches the backing and finishes the scalloped edge. Scissors are still required for trimming during the ITH sequence.

Is this freestanding lace?

No. The design requires front fabric, backing fabric and two layers of tear-away stabilizer. It cannot be embroidered only on water-soluble film.

Can I change the flower and border colors?

Yes. The poinsettias can be embroidered in burgundy, coral, pink, ivory or another coordinated palette. Preserve the eight programmed blocks and the final construction sequence even when repeating the same thread color.

Is a finished placemat included?

No. The purchase contains downloadable DST embroidery files. Plates, fabric, thread, stabilizer and finished table linens are not included.
