Turn a plain textile into a bold resort-style statement with one sweeping botanical motif. The Tropical Fan Palm Leaf Machine Embroidery Design opens in a broad radial shape, giving totes, cushions, wall panels and garment backs an immediate tropical identity without needing a full floral composition.

The same leaf is professionally prepared in 10 sizes, from 128.0x132.6 mm / 5.04x5.22 in to an oversized 320.1x331.8 mm / 12.60x13.06 in version. Choose a compact size for a tote or pillow accent, a medium version for bedding and curtains, or one of the largest files for a dramatic wall hanging, quilt center or statement back panel.

Color changes the entire character of the motif. Deep emerald creates lush botanical depth; moss or gray-green suits natural linen and calm interiors; bright gold turns the leaf into glamorous tropical décor; and tone-on-tone stitching gives modern textiles a quieter designer finish.

Check the machine’s real embroidery field, not only the hoop name. The 128.0 mm / 5.04 in, 138.2 mm / 5.44 in, 158.1 mm / 6.22 in, 198.1 mm / 7.80 in, 238.1 mm / 9.37 in and 298.1 mm / 11.74 in widths sit extremely close to common field limits. A machine that reserves an internal safety margin may reject the file even when its nominal hoop dimension appears large enough. Use the next larger hoop whenever possible.

This design does not fit a standard 100x100 mm / 3.94x3.94 in (commonly called 4x4 in) hoop. Rotating the motif does not help because both dimensions of the smallest file exceed 100 mm / 3.94 in.

Recommended Madeira Thread Palettes

The current product page does not publish an official manufacturer-number color chart. The exact Madeira colors below are recommended styling options, not claimed matches to an unpublished source sequence.

The leaf is visually strong enough to work as monochrome embroidery. If the machine preview displays more than one programmed stop, retain the original stitch order and load the same thread at each stop when creating a one-color version. Do not merge or delete stitch blocks unless you have inspected the file in embroidery software.

Look Exact thread Best fabric colors Visual result
Deep emerald Madeira Classic Rayon 40 No. 1304 Emerald Ivy Green White, ivory, sand, blush, black Rich tropical greenery with a polished rayon sheen
Natural moss Madeira Classic Rayon 40 No. 1189 Moss Green Natural linen, oatmeal, cream, terracotta Calm botanical color for organic and boho interiors
Muted gray-green Madeira Classic Rayon 40 No. 1339 Spanish Moss Green Gray Stone, taupe, cool white, charcoal Sophisticated spa palette with less saturated green
Washable emerald Madeira Polyneon 40 No. 1970 Emerald Green White, navy, denim, outdoor and frequently washed textiles Durable saturated polyester color for practical projects
Warm botanical gold Madeira Classic Rayon 40 No. 1024 Gold Rush White, black, navy, emerald, burgundy Glamorous resort finish without metallic-thread handling

Choose rayon for a soft, lustrous decorative finish and polyester for totes, garments, cushions or linens that will be washed frequently. Compare colors with a physical thread chart before stitching because monitor settings cannot reproduce thread shades exactly.

Exact Stabilizers for Different Projects

Fabric or project Backing Topping Method
Medium cotton, linen or stable décor fabric Madeira Cotton Soft 60, 60 g/m² tear-away Not required Hoop fabric and backing together. Use two crossed layers for loose linen or the larger stitch-intensive versions.
Tote canvas, upholstery fabric or dense wall panel Madeira Weblon Plus Fusible, 70 g/m² cut-away Not required on a smooth surface Fuse without stretching and leave the permanent support beneath the broad leaf after embroidery.
Satin, poplin or smooth lightweight woven fabric Madeira CMX Fusible, 48 g/m² fusible tear-away Not required Fuse to the wrong side, then hoop smoothly. Test for puckering before committing to the final fabric.
Sweatshirt knit, stretch velour or elastic fabric Madeira Weblon Plus Fusible, 70 g/m² cut-away Madeira Avalon, 20 μm, on pile Use a 75/11 ballpoint embroidery needle and keep the cut-away as permanent support.
Terry, velvet, fleece or another raised surface Madeira Cotton Soft 60 for stable fabric or Weblon Plus Fusible for stretch Madeira Avalon, 20 μm water-soluble film The topping prevents leaf details from sinking into loops or pile; it does not replace backing.
Finished tote, curtain panel or item that cannot be hooped Madeira StickOn, 50 g/m² self-adhesive tear-away Madeira Avalon only on pile Hoop StickOn alone, expose the adhesive, align the marked item and run a basting box before stitching.

The stabilizer must support both the fabric and the selected size. The largest files contain more than 50,000 stitches, so a backing that works for the smallest version may be insufficient for an oversized wall panel or garment back. Test the complete combination of size, fabric, thread and stabilizer.

Best Projects for the Fan Palm Leaf

  • a statement tote bag or beach bag with the leaf centered on the front panel;
  • tropical pillow covers and coordinated cushions in emerald, moss, gold or tone-on-tone thread;
  • a framed textile panel, wall hanging or quilt center using one of the oversized DST files;
  • duvet covers, bed runners, curtain panels and resort-style bedroom textiles;
  • the back of a jacket, loose dress, caftan, robe or sweatshirt with sufficient fabric support;
  • spa, hotel, beach-house, conservatory and botanical interior décor;
  • table runners, wide placemat centers and decorative linen panels;
  • summer gifts, housewarming textiles and personalized resort accessories.

For a coordinated collection, repeat the same prepared size on two cushion fronts, then use a larger version on a central wall panel or bed runner. Keep the thread color consistent so the different scales read as one designed interior rather than unrelated projects.

Placement and Composition

Print the selected template at 100% and mark both center axes. On a tote or cushion, place the broad top of the leaf high enough to balance the stem visually while keeping every stitched edge away from seams, piping, zippers and thick hems. On a garment back, test the template on the body before hooping; a broad leaf may look centered mathematically but sit too high once the garment is worn.

Run the machine’s boundary trace before stitching, especially with files whose width leaves less than 2 mm / 0.08 in of total clearance in the nominal field. For large panels, support the weight of the fabric beside the machine so it cannot drag against the hoop during embroidery.

Recommended Machine Settings

  1. Use one of the supplied sizes instead of scaling the file extensively in the machine.
  2. Test on the same fabric, backing, thread and needle planned for the final project.
  3. For Rayon or Polyester No. 40 on stable woven fabric, begin with a fresh 75/11 embroidery needle.
  4. For sweatshirt knit or elastic fabric, use a 75/11 ballpoint embroidery needle and permanent cut-away backing.
  5. Begin near 600–700 stitches per minute; reduce speed if the large motif causes fabric movement, thread breaks or registration loss.
  6. Hoop smoothly without stretching. Support large fabric panels so their weight cannot pull on the moving hoop.
  7. Use water-soluble topping only on terry, fleece, velvet or another raised surface.
  8. After stitching, support the embroidery while removing tear-away; trim permanent cut-away to a smooth rounded margin.

Do not try to correct puckering by sharply increasing upper tension. First check hooping, stabilizer strength, fabric stretch, needle condition and machine speed. Change one variable at a time after a complete test stitch.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the listing contain 10 different palm leaves?

No. It contains one tropical fan palm leaf motif professionally prepared in 10 different sizes.

Does the smallest size fit a 5x7 hoop?

The 128.0x132.6 mm / 5.04x5.22 in file fits a true 130x180 mm / 5.12x7.09 in embroidery field, but the 128.0 mm / 5.04 in side leaves only 2.0 mm / 0.08 in of total clearance. Check the machine’s maximum accepted design dimensions; use a larger hoop if the machine reserves a safety margin.

Does the design fit a 4x4 hoop?

No. The smallest file measures 128.0x132.6 mm / 5.04x5.22 in, so both dimensions exceed a standard 100x100 mm / 3.94x3.94 in (commonly called 4x4 in) field.

Are all 10 sizes supplied in every format?

No. The first seven sizes, from 128.0x132.6 mm / 5.04x5.22 in through 238.1x246.7 mm / 9.37x9.71 in, are supplied in DST, JEF, PEC, VIP, HUS, PES, DAT, EXP, VP3, SEW and XXX. The three largest sizes are supplied in DST only.

Which thread color works best for a tropical look?

Madeira Classic Rayon 40 No. 1304 Emerald Ivy Green gives a deep polished green, while No. 1189 Moss Green creates a softer natural result. Madeira Polyneon 40 No. 1970 Emerald Green is a practical choice for washable totes and garments.

Can I stitch the palm leaf in one color?

Yes. A monochrome treatment emphasizes the fan-shaped silhouette. If the file contains more than one programmed stop, use the same thread at each stop and preserve the original stitch order.

Which stabilizer should I use for a tote bag?

For stable canvas, use strong support such as Madeira Weblon Plus Fusible 70 g/m² cut-away, especially for larger versions. Test first because tote fabrics vary greatly in weight, coating and stretch.

Can I resize the design?

Use one of the 10 prepared sizes whenever possible. Strong percentage scaling can alter stitch length, density, pull compensation and the shape of the radiating leaf sections. A substantially different size requires professional stitch recalculation.

May I sell items embroidered with this design?

Yes. Finished physical items may be sold within the Royal Present Embroidery license. The digital design files themselves may not be copied, shared, traded, uploaded or resold.

What will I receive after purchase?

You will receive a ZIP archive containing the prepared machine embroidery files. This is a digital product; no stitched sample, thread, fabric, stabilizer or physical item is shipped.
