This Pirate Skull Machine Embroidery Design features a grinning skull in a wine-red bandana holding a curved sabre. The detailed outlines, shaded bone areas and handwritten Pirate Skull lettering create a bold design for pirate costumes, denim jackets, hoodies, backpacks, children’s room décor and biker-style patches. Three included sizes make it possible to choose a version for a 4x4", 5x7" or 8x8" embroidery hoop.

Use the smaller size as the central detail of a child’s pirate costume, T-shirt, sweatshirt, costume vest or trick-or-treat bag. The skull, bandana and sabre are immediately recognizable, so the design does not need additional pirate lettering or decorative elements to communicate the theme.
The medium size works well on backpacks, tote bags, hoodie fronts, denim jacket panels and decorative pillows for a pirate-themed children’s room. For a coordinated bedroom set, embroider the motif on a pillowcase and repeat only the wine-red, ivory and dark-gray colors in the surrounding textile décor.
The largest version creates a strong statement on the back of a denim jacket, bomber jacket, hoodie or biker vest. It can also be stitched on polyester twill or dense felt and finished as a large removable pirate patch. Because this version contains 56871 stitches, it requires firm stabilization and careful hooping.
The original chart contains 7 thread colors and 9 embroidery steps. The numbers below are the numbers printed in the source color chart. They are not Madeira thread shade numbers. The color squares reproduce the shades shown in the original chart, but monitor settings may affect their appearance.
Use 40-weight rayon or polyester embroidery thread with 60-weight bobbin thread. Rayon gives the bandana, lettering and shaded skull areas a stronger sheen, while polyester is a practical choice for jackets, backpacks and children’s costumes that will be washed frequently.
For cotton twill, canvas and medium denim, start with a sharp embroidery needle in size 75/11 or 80/12. Heavy denim may require a 90/14 needle. Replace the needle before stitching the largest size: a worn point can produce thread breaks, skipped stitches and uneven outlines during a long embroidery run.
Hoop the stabilizer and fabric together whenever the project permits. If temporary spray adhesive is needed, apply a light layer to the stabilizer away from the embroidery machine, wait until it becomes tacky and then position the fabric. Heavy overspray can leave adhesive on the needle, presser foot and bobbin area.
For a patch, embroider on polyester twill, patch fabric or dense felt backed with cut-away stabilizer. Trim the finished patch with sharp scissors or a hot knife suitable for synthetic fabric. Do not cut immediately beside the satin-stitched edges unless the design has been digitized with a dedicated patch border.
Run a test stitch on the same fabric and stabilizer combination before embroidering a finished jacket, costume or backpack. Check that the wine-red bandana remains flat, the sabre does not pull the fabric into a curve and the black finishing outlines meet the underlying color areas correctly.
