Create elegant botanical embroidery with this Hogweed machine embroidery design, inspired by the tall stems and umbrella-shaped flowers of Heracleum. The monochrome line-art motif imitates decorative hand stitching and works especially well on linen pillows, table runners, tote bags, curtain panels, jackets and framed textile art.

Hoop guide

Design size Suitable embroidery field
126.4x178.8 mm (4.98x7.04 ") Fits an embroidery field of at least 130x180 mm, including a standard 5x7 inch hoop with a true 130x180 mm sewing field.
137.9x195.0 mm (5.43x7.68 ") Suitable for a 140x200 mm or larger embroidery field.
154.2x217.9 mm (6.07x8.58 ") Suitable for a 160x220 mm, 160x240 mm or larger embroidery field.
168.3x238.0 mm (6.63x9.37 ") Suitable for a 180x300 mm or larger embroidery field.
177.8x251.5 mm (7.00x9.90 ") Suitable for a 180x300 mm or larger embroidery field.
197.9x279.9 mm (7.79x11.02 ") Suitable for a 200x300 mm, 8x12 inch or larger embroidery field.

Always check the actual embroidery field supported by your machine. The commercial hoop name and its outside dimensions do not always match the usable sewing area.

Where to embroider the botanical hogweed design

Project Recommended placement
Linen pillow Embroider the front panel before assembling the pillow. Center the plant vertically or position it asymmetrically for a modern botanical interior.
Table runner Place one motif at each end of the runner. Mirror the second plant in embroidery software if you want a symmetrical arrangement.
Tote bag Embroider the bag panel before construction. Cotton canvas, linen canvas and denim provide stable support for the tall design.
Jacket or long vest Use one of the larger sizes on the back panel. Mark the center while the garment is lying flat and check that seams, vents and lining will not interfere with the hoop.
Curtain panel The clean monochrome motif can be repeated along the lower part of a linen or cotton curtain. Keep the same distance between repeated stitchouts.
Textile wall art Embroider on linen or cotton and mount the finished piece in a frame. Leave enough unembroidered fabric around the motif for stretching and framing.
Decorative towel Choose a smooth linen or flat-weave cotton towel. Deep terry pile can hide the fine hand-stitch details unless water-soluble topping is added.

One-color chart

This is a monochrome embroidery design. The entire plant is embroidered with one thread color, so there are no obligatory manufacturer thread numbers. Black creates a graphic botanical silhouette, but olive green, dark brown, white, gold or another contrasting color can be selected to match the project.

Step Thread number Suggested color Swatch Embroidered segments
1 No fixed manufacturer number Botanical Black The complete hogweed plant: stems, leaves, flower heads and all hand-stitch-style details.

Alternative monochrome palettes

Color Swatch Best combination
Olive Green Natural linen, cream cotton, botanical home décor and rustic table textiles.
Dark Brown Beige linen, canvas bags, autumn interiors and neutral cushions.
Antique Gold Black, navy or deep green fabric. Use regular polyester or rayon thread in a gold shade for easier stitching than metallic thread.
Soft White Black linen, dark denim, velvet-look décor fabric and dramatic monochrome projects.

Hand-stitch effect and clean reverse

The design is digitized in a hand-stitch-style technique and stitches without jump stitches. This reduces loose connecting threads and makes the reverse cleaner than the back of a conventional multi-section embroidery design.

The front and reverse will not be technically identical on every machine because lock stitches, bobbin tension and the proportion of bobbin thread remain visible. However, with correctly balanced tension and a bobbin thread matching the upper thread, the reverse can look unusually neat and close to the front. This is useful for table runners, napkins, curtains and other projects where both sides may be seen.

Do not use automatic color sorting or unnecessary editing that can divide the continuous stitching sequence. Changes to the sequence may create additional jumps or trims that are not present in the original file.

Recommended stabilizers

Fabric or project Retail stabilizer Weight How to use it
Light or medium-weight linen Sulky Tear-Easy 0.97 oz/yd² — 33 g/m² Use one layer on firm linen and two layers on lightweight or loosely woven linen. Tear away one layer at a time.
Washable table runner or curtain OESD Ultra Clean & Tear 1.7 oz/yd² — approximately 57.6 g/m² Hoop one layer with the fabric. The remaining fibers soften and gradually break down during laundering.
Cotton canvas, denim or tote bag Floriani Medium Weight Firm Tearaway 1.5 oz/yd² — approximately 50.9 g/m² Use one hooped layer. If the largest size causes movement during the test stitch, float a second layer beneath the hoop.
Knit jacket, sweatshirt or stretchy fabric Sulky Soft ’n Sheer Plus Cut-Away 1.62 oz/yd² — 55 g/m² Hoop without stretching the knit. After embroidery, trim the stabilizer approximately 1/4 inch or 6 mm from the design.

Thread, needle and machine settings

  • Use size 40 rayon or polyester machine embroidery thread for the stitch thickness intended by the digitizing.
  • Rayon produces a softer shine and an elegant hand-embroidered appearance.
  • Polyester is better for bags, jackets, table linens and frequently washed projects.
  • Use a fresh 75/11 embroidery needle for linen, cotton and medium-weight woven fabric.
  • Use an 80/12 embroidery needle for canvas, denim or heavy decorative fabric.
  • Start at approximately 500–650 stitches per minute. A moderate speed helps maintain consistent tension along the long botanical stems.
  • If you experiment with size 30 cotton thread, make a complete test first and use an 80/12 needle. The file was not automatically recalculated for thicker thread.
  • Use matching bobbin thread when the reverse side will remain visible.

How to prevent distorted stems

The design is tall and contains long narrow elements. If the fabric moves inside the hoop, stems can become wavy and the flower heads may shift out of alignment. Hoop the fabric and stabilizer firmly, but do not stretch the fabric or tighten the hoop screw after the material has already been positioned.

Use the smallest hoop that safely accommodates the selected size. A very large hoop leaves more unsupported fabric around the embroidery area and increases the risk of movement.

Before embroidering the finished item, stitch the complete design on a sample made from the same fabric, stabilizer, thread and needle. Check the reverse, thread tension and registration before starting the final project.

Resizing information

Choose one of the six professionally prepared sizes instead of enlarging or reducing the file directly on the embroidery machine. Significant resizing can alter running-stitch length, reinforcement stitches and the hand-stitched appearance. If another size is required, the stitch structure should be recalculated in professional embroidery software.

This stitched beautifully, I am very pleased with the result. However mine did not stitch out with front and back sides identical as the description claimed. Reverse side was just a bit neater than the usual (mess) due to reduced number of jump stitches.
