Which size and hoop should I use?

The smallest crown fits a full 10 × 10 cm (4 × 4 in) embroidery field. Its width is 9.94 cm (3.91 in), so confirm that your machine provides the complete usable field.

The largest crown is stored sideways in the embroidery file so it can fit a 13 × 18 cm (5 × 7 in) hoop. Hoop the towel sideways relative to its finished position and stitch the file in the supplied orientation. After the towel is removed from the hoop and turned upright, the finished crown will measure approximately 15.74 × 10.34 cm (6.20 × 4.07 in). Do not rotate this file inside the machine, because its 15.74 cm (6.20 in) width will not fit across a 13 cm (5 in) embroidery field.

How to embroider the crown on a terry cloth towel

1. Prewash the towel. Wash and dry it before embroidery to remove manufacturing finishes and allow any initial shrinkage to occur. Avoid fabric softener before stitching.
2. Mark the placement. Mark the vertical and horizontal center lines with a removable fabric marker. On a hood, center the crown between the side seams.
3. Support the reverse. Use medium-weight tear-away stabilizer under the towel. Apply temporary embroidery adhesive to the stabilizer, not directly to the visible side of the towel, and attach it to the reverse.
4. Hoop securely. Hoop the towel and stabilizer together whenever the thickness allows. The fabric must remain flat but should not be stretched or crushed excessively.
5. Add water-soluble topping. Place lightweight water-soluble film over the terry surface. The topping prevents the towel loops from rising through the open crown details and swallowing the narrower satin stitches.
6. Select the needle and thread. Use a 75/11 or 80/12 embroidery needle with 40-weight polyester or rayon thread. Polyester is preferable for towels that will be washed frequently.
7. Embroider at moderate speed. Check that the loose parts of the towel cannot move under the hoop or become caught by the embroidery arm.
8. Finish carefully. Tear away the excess backing while supporting the stitches. Remove the topping and dissolve small remaining pieces with water. Do not pull the stabilizer aggressively from the open ornamental areas.

How to embroider a finished hooded towel

The safest method is to embroider the separate triangular hood panel before it is sewn to the towel. This provides a flat embroidery area and prevents the crown from accidentally stitching the hood to the towel underneath.

When embroidering a ready-made hooded towel, place the hoop or hooped stabilizer inside the hood pocket so that only the outer hood layer is in the stitching area. Fold and secure the main towel completely outside the embroidery field. Turn the handwheel slowly before starting and confirm that the needle will penetrate only the intended hood layer.

For a hood that will touch a child’s forehead, apply a soft embroidery backing to the reverse after stitching. This covers the bobbin thread and prevents the finished embroidery from scratching sensitive skin.

Gold polyester, rayon or metallic thread

The supplied chart lists Madeira Classic 1350, which produces a smooth golden appearance without requiring metallic thread. Use 40-weight gold polyester for frequently washed towels and robes. Rayon or viscose provides a softer, more reflective finish for decorative pillows and occasion textiles.

Metallic gold thread can also be used because the entire crown is embroidered in one color. Install a Metallic 90/14 needle, reduce the machine speed to approximately 400–600 stitches per minute and adjust the upper tension after a complete test stitch. Metallic thread is less suitable for a child’s towel if the selected thread feels rough against the skin.
