Vintage Monogram Z with Ornamental Roses is a free machine embroidery design created for elegant textile personalization. The graceful capital letter, flowing scrollwork and small ornamental roses form a complete vintage composition that looks more like a family emblem than a simple initial.

Stitch the monogram in two closely related gold shades to create the look of aged gilding. A brighter gold defines the letter and principal scrolls, while a softer antique-gold tone gives the roses and small details more depth. This refined combination is especially effective on white, ivory, black, burgundy and navy textiles.

The free letter Z is also a practical way to test the digitizing quality, stitch density and fabric–stabilizer combination on your own machine before purchasing the complete Vintage Alphabet with Roses bundle.

Hoop requirements

Design size Minimum embroidery field Suitable hoop field
110.6x89.8 mm (4.35x3.54 in) at least 111x90 mm 120x120 mm, 130x180 mm (5x7 in) or larger

Important: this design does not fit a standard 100x100 mm (4x4 in) embroidery field because it is 110.6 mm wide. Rotating it by 90 degrees does not solve the problem: one side would still exceed 100 mm. Always check the actual embroidery field supported by your machine, not only the outer dimensions of the physical hoop.

Recommended Madeira Classic 40 gold palette

The original product page does not specify manufacturer thread numbers. The two-color palette below is a carefully selected recommendation for an elegant vintage-gold finish; it is not presented as the original production color chart.

Color Exact thread Recommended use Visual effect
Bright gold Madeira Classic Rayon 40 No. 1024 Gold Rush Ornamental roses and smaller accent details Warm yellow gold with a clean rayon sheen
Muted antique gold Madeira Classic Rayon 40 No. 1173 Autumn Gold Letter Z and the principal ornamental scrolls Deeper gold-brown that softens and visually ages the brighter gold

This pair creates clear tonal separation without the harsh contrast of yellow and dark brown. No. 1173 Autumn Gold is not a pale yellow; it is a quieter gold-brown shade that gives No. 1024 Gold Rush a more sophisticated antique finish. Screen swatches are approximate, so make the final choice with a physical Madeira color card and a test stitch on the project fabric.

Madeira Classic Rayon 40 is viscose rayon, not metallic thread. It provides a smooth, silk-like luster, travels reliably through detailed areas and works with a standard embroidery needle No. 75/11. Check the design preview on your machine and assign the brighter gold to the dominant letter and scrollwork blocks and the muted gold to the rose and accent blocks. Keep every original color stop in its original order.

Exact stabilizers for different fabrics

Fabric or project Backing Topping How to use it
Linen, quilting cotton or stable décor fabric Madeira Cotton Soft 50, tear-away, 50 g/m² Not required Hoop the fabric and one layer together. Use two layers placed in different grain directions for loosely woven linen.
Terry towel Madeira Cotton Soft 60, tear-away, 60 g/m² Madeira Avalon, water-soluble topping, 20 μm Cotton Soft supports the 14,505 stitches from below; Avalon keeps the small roses and scrolls from sinking into the pile.
Satin, poplin or another fine stable woven fabric Madeira CMX Fusible, fusible tear-away, 48 g/m² Not required on a smooth surface Fuse to the wrong side without stretching the fabric. The adhesive layer reduces shifting and rippling around the monogram.
Knit, stretch velour or another elastic fabric Madeira Weblon Plus Fusible, fusible cut-away, 70 g/m² Madeira Avalon on a raised or pile surface Trim the Weblon Plus to a 5–8 mm margin after stitching. Use a Ball Point embroidery needle No. 75/11 on knit fabric.
Finished item that cannot be hooped Madeira StickOn, self-adhesive tear-away, 50 g/m² Madeira Avalon for terry or velour Hoop StickOn alone, expose the adhesive area and float the item on the marked centerlines. Run the machine’s design-boundary trace before stitching.

Where the monogram looks especially effective

  • centered on the smooth decorative band of a white terry hand towel;
  • in the center or one corner of a pillowcase or decorative cushion cover;
  • on a cosmetic bag, tote bag, tablet sleeve or textile organizer;
  • on a napkin, table runner or personalized place setting;
  • on a robe, jacket back, large pocket or fabric accessory;
  • on a wedding gift, drawstring gift bag or family linen set personalized with the initial Z.

For a strong product photograph, use a white terry hand towel with a wide smooth woven band. Stitch the letter and scrollwork in Madeira No. 1024 and the ornamental roses in No. 1173. Soft side lighting will reveal the rayon luster while the muted second shade keeps the gold treatment from looking flat or overly yellow.

Accurate placement of the letter Z

Print the design template at 100% scale and mark both centerlines. On a towel, center the monogram within the smooth horizontal band. On a pillowcase, bag or garment, first identify the area that will remain visible after assembly; the technical center of a pattern piece is not always its visual center.

Use the machine’s hoop-tracing or design-boundary function before stitching. Allow for seams, zippers, hems and bulky edges. When embroidering a pair or a set of towels, keep the same distance from the lower edge and the same monogram height on every piece.

Recommended machine settings

For Madeira Classic Rayon 40, use a new Embroidery needle No. 75/11 and begin at approximately 600–700 stitches per minute. Avoid maximum speed through dense transitions and the small rose details. Adjust upper-thread tension only after testing the complete combination of fabric, thread, needle and stabilizer.

Do not stretch the fabric in the hoop. Stabilize it first, then hoop it smoothly and firmly without distortion. Remove tear-away backing in small sections while supporting the stitches with your fingers.

Frequently asked questions

Does this monogram fit a 4x4 hoop?

No. A 100x100 mm (4x4 in) embroidery field is too small because the design is 110.6 mm wide. Use a field of at least 111x90 mm; practical standard options include 120x120 mm or 130x180 mm (5x7 in).

How many thread colors does the design use?

Use two colors for the vintage-gold treatment: Madeira Classic Rayon 40 No. 1024 Gold Rush as the bright main shade and No. 1173 Autumn Gold as the muted accent. The original product page does not assign Madeira numbers, so these are recommended substitutions rather than an original manufacturer chart.

Can I stitch the entire monogram in one color?

Yes. A single-color version will be elegant, but two shades separate the roses from the letter and reveal more of the ornament. Keep the original sequence of color blocks even when the machine does not require a thread change.

Can I use metallic thread?

Yes. Install a Metallic needle No. 90/14, reduce the speed to approximately 500–600 stitches per minute and test first. For the most reliable result, use metallic gold for the dominant letter and scrollwork blocks and Madeira Classic Rayon 40 No. 1173 for the smaller roses.

Which stabilizer should I use for a terry towel?

Use Madeira Cotton Soft 60 tear-away beneath the towel and Madeira Avalon 20 μm water-soluble topping above the pile. Avalon may be omitted when the design is stitched entirely on a smooth, pile-free woven band.

Can I resize the design?

Significant scaling of a finished machine file can alter stitch density, stitch length and the clarity of the small roses. A substantially different exact size requires professional stitch recalculation rather than simple percentage scaling.

May I sell items embroidered with this design?

Yes. Finished physical items embroidered with the design may be sold under the Royal Present Embroidery license. The digital embroidery files may not be shared, published, traded or resold.

What is included in the download?

One size of the Monogram Z design in DST, JEF, PEC, VIP, HUS, PES, EXP, SEW, DAT, VP3 and ART formats, supplied in a ZIP archive. Fabric, thread, stabilizer and a finished embroidered item are not included.
