Single-Color Floral Towel Border Machine Embroidery Design is a one-color decorative motif created for terry bath towels, hand towels, guest towels, spa textiles and matching bathroom sets. Three stylized flowers form an open geometric arrangement that fits a 4x4 hoop and can be repeated to create a longer towel border.

The design uses one programmed thread block with no color changes. Its separated flower sections and open fabric spaces avoid a heavy solid background, helping the embroidery remain flexible and readable on terry cloth when a water-soluble topping is placed above the pile.

Size: 100.0x77.4 mm (3.94x3.05 "), Stitches: 9443
Formats: .dst, .jef, .pec, .vip, .hus, .pes, .sew, .exp, .dat, vp3, art, xxx

Original Madeira Classic Rayon Color

The original chart contains one shade of Madeira Classic Rayon No. 40 and no color changes. The number and official color name were checked on the Madeira USA website. The digital swatch was calculated programmatically from the central thread area of the official spool photograph.

Color Madeira Classic Rayon Swatch HEX Programmed block
1181 Candy Apple Red #7E0515 1 — complete floral motif; 0 color changes

Important: the HEX swatch is a screen representation derived from the official thread photograph; it cannot replace a physical thread chart. Monitor settings, lighting and the sheen of rayon change how the color appears. Use the Madeira number when selecting or ordering thread.

Color Ideas for Towels

The original Candy Apple Red looks strong on white and cream towels. The same one-color design also works well in pink on white, white on pastel towels, navy on light gray, beige on natural linen or tone-on-tone for a hotel and spa look. Because the towel remains visible between the flower sections, choose enough contrast for the motif to stay readable above the pile.

For towels exposed to frequent washing, chlorine or commercial laundering, a practical color-equivalent alternative is Madeira Polyneon No. 40 1747 Candy Apple Red. The original design chart still refers to Madeira Classic Rayon 1181.

Recommended Stabilizer for Terry Towels

  • Best general method: place a medium-weight tear-away stabilizer under the towel and a water-soluble topping above the pile.
  • Lower stabilizer: use one firm layer around 50–70 g/m². It supports the open flower sections during stitching but leaves a softer reverse than permanent cut-away backing.
  • Upper topping: use Madeira E-Zee Aqua Supreme, Sulky Solvy or a similar thin water-soluble film. The topping prevents the stitches from sinking between the terry loops.
  • After stitching: tear away the large backing sections gently while supporting the stitches with your fingers. Small fibers left beneath the design soften with repeated washing and become far less visible.

On a white or light towel stitched with pink, red or another colored thread, the pale remnants of tear-away stabilizer blend into the towel. The reverse may look slightly lighter than the front, but it remains more presentable and flexible than a large piece of cut-away backing.

Alternative Wash-Away Backing for a Cleaner Reverse

A strong fabric-like wash-away stabilizer can be used underneath when the reverse of the towel will remain visible. Do not use a thin topping film as the only lower support; topping is not strong enough to hold 9443 stitches during embroidery.

After the wash-away backing dissolves, the embroidery has no permanent support. This method therefore needs a test on the same towel: loose or very soft terry may distort after laundering. For reliable everyday towels, tear-away backing is the safer primary choice.

How to Make the Reverse More Presentable

Wind the bobbin with thread in the same color as the upper thread. For the original palette, use Candy Apple Red on both sides. A less bulky option is Madeira Classic Rayon No. 60 1181 Candy Apple Red in the bobbin with Madeira Classic Rayon No. 40 1181 on top.

If you wind No. 40 upper thread onto the bobbin, test first: it is thicker than standard bobbin thread, reduces bobbin capacity and can change tension balance. The finished reverse can be neat and color-coordinated, but it will not be identical to the front because bobbin tension, needle penetrations and any connecting stitches remain visible.

How to Embroider This Border on Terry Cloth

  1. Prewash and dry the towel so later shrinkage does not distort the finished border.
  2. Mark the vertical and horizontal centerlines with a removable textile marker. Keep the motif away from a thick hem or folded edge.
  3. Place medium tear-away stabilizer under the towel. Add temporary embroidery spray only to the stabilizer and use a light, even application.
  4. Hoop the towel with the stabilizer without stretching the fabric. The towel should lie flat and secure, not be pulled drum-tight.
  5. Place water-soluble topping over the terry pile and secure it outside the embroidery area.
  6. Use a fresh 75/11 embroidery needle. For unusually thick terry, test an 80/12 needle and check that the holes are not too visible.
  7. Stitch the complete one-color block. Do not pull or support the moving hoop by hand.
  8. Remove the hoop, tear away the lower stabilizer carefully and remove the large pieces of topping. Warm water removes the small remaining topping fragments.

If the Towel Cannot Be Hooped

Hoop a self-adhesive tear-away stabilizer such as Madeira Cotton Fix with its paper side facing up. Score and remove the paper inside the hoop, align the marked towel and press it firmly onto the adhesive surface without stretching. Add a basting box if your machine or embroidery software provides one, then place water-soluble topping above the towel before stitching.

This floating method is useful near bulky towel hems and on ready-made towels that would be crushed or distorted by the hoop. Check that the towel cannot shift and that no free edge can catch on the presser foot.

How to Repeat the Motif Without Overlaps

  1. Test one unit first and measure the stitched outer edges, not only the nominal 100.0x77.4 mm file box.
  2. In Border or Design Repeat mode, set the copies on one straight centerline and keep equal spacing between their nearest stitched points.
  3. Preview the entire group and use the machine’s trace function before stitching.
  4. For rehooping, mark the center of the next unit and use printed placement templates or registration marks. Do not align by eye from the terry loops.
  5. Do not overlap two complete file boxes unless a test stitch proves the intended interlocking placement. Overlapping programmed flower sections can create stiff, over-dense areas.

Practical tip: stitch one repeat on scrap terry with the same pile height. Photograph the tested placement and record the exact center-to-center distance. Reuse that number for every towel in a matching set.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this design fit a 4x4 hoop?

Yes, if the machine accepts the full 100.0x77.4 mm file. Some nominal 4x4 hoops have a slightly smaller usable field, so check both file dimensions against the machine specification.

How many thread colors does the design use?

One. The original chart uses Madeira Classic Rayon No. 40 1181 Candy Apple Red. The machine stitches the complete motif in one programmed color block with 0 color changes.

Can I change the red to another color?

Yes. Because the entire motif is one color, substitute any thread that contrasts clearly with the towel. White towels work especially well with pink, red, navy, green, brown or metallic-look shades.

Should I use tear-away or wash-away stabilizer underneath?

Use medium tear-away as the primary method. It supports the stitches, removes cleanly and becomes softer after repeated washing. A strong fabric-like wash-away backing can produce a cleaner reverse, but it must be tested because all structural support disappears after washing.

Do I still need water-soluble topping?

Yes, on terry cloth. The topping is placed above the towel to stop stitches from sinking into the loops. It does not replace the tear-away or strong wash-away backing underneath.

Can the embroidery look neat on both sides?

Use the same color in the bobbin and as the upper thread for a more coordinated reverse. A No. 60 matching thread reduces bulk. The reverse will look presentable, but it cannot be identical to the front because the bobbin stitch structure and connecting stitches remain visible.

Can I create a longer continuous border?

Yes. Repeat the motif with the machine’s Border, Endless Embroidery or Design Repeat function, or rehoop accurately. Test the center-to-center spacing first and do not overlap stitched flower sections.

Can I resize the design?

Use the supplied 100.0x77.4 mm size whenever possible. Strong scaling changes stitch length, density, pull compensation and the spacing inside the flower sections.

Is a test stitch necessary?

Yes. Test on terry with the same pile height, stabilizer, topping, thread, bobbin setup and needle planned for the final towel. This is especially important for wash-away backing and repeated border layouts.
