Big Christmas Stocking with Snowman Machine Embroidery Design is a colorful watercolor-style embroidery file for festive textiles and handmade holiday gift packaging. A cheerful snowman in a red hat holds a present and fir branches, while the turquoise background, stripes, dots and contrasting outlines complete the large Christmas stocking composition.

The download includes five ready-to-stitch sizes. This is not an ITH stocking project and not a sewing pattern: the embroidery machine stitches the decorative front panel, while the stocking back, lining, cuff, hanging loop and final assembly must be made separately. Sewing skills and your own stocking pattern are required.

The airy watercolor transitions are most visible on smooth, light-colored fabric. A pale background supports the intentionally open areas and keeps the white, beige, yellow and light-green details clear.

Compatible Hoop Sizes

  • the 166.6x218.6 mm (6.56x8.61 in) and 178.5x234.1 mm (7.03x9.22 in) files require a 180x300 mm (7.09x11.81 in) hoop or embroidery field;
  • the 198.5x260.3 mm (7.81x10.25 in) file requires a 200x300 mm (7.87x11.81 in) hoop or embroidery field;
  • the 218.5x286.5 mm (8.60x11.28 in) and 227.6x298.5 mm (8.96x11.75 in) files require a 300x300 mm (11.81x11.81 in) hoop or embroidery field.

Compare both design dimensions with the actual embroidery field listed in your machine manual, not only with the commercial hoop name. The file fits when its width and height are within the usable field in the original orientation or after a 90-degree rotation.

Original Madeira Classic Rayon Palette

The original color chart contains 15 shades of Madeira Classic Rayon No. 40. The official thread numbers and names were checked against the Madeira Classic color chart. Each digital swatch was calculated programmatically from the central thread area in the official Madeira USA spool photograph.

Color Madeira Classic Rayon Design element
1093 Azure Sea turquoise stocking background
1071 Baby’s Breath snowman, pom-pom and pale details
1146 Tomato Red hat, scarf and red stripes
1109 Pink Rose cheeks, pink stripes and heart
1248 Margarita Lime light-green stripes and fir needles
1170 Fern dark-green stripes and fir needles
1354 Watermelon bright-pink edging and decorative accents
1180 Daffodil yellow stripe and stars
1137 Citrus Burst orange dots and main carrot-nose color
1138 Doe Skin soft beige shading
1244 Darkest Night main dark outlines and eyes
1032 Velvet Violet violet gift box
1351 Alligator deep-green stems
1026 Orange Sorbet light carrot-nose highlight
1006 Diamond Black black facial details

Important: each HEX swatch is a screen representation derived from the official thread photograph; it cannot replace a physical thread chart. Madeira notes that monitors, printing, lighting and the sheen of rayon all affect color appearance. For critical color matching, compare the actual spools with your fabric in daylight.

Repeated thread numbers are separate programmed blocks for different design elements. Do not reorder or automatically merge these stops. Check the color film in your embroidery software and make a test stitch before embroidering the final stocking panel.

Fabric, Stabilizer and Needle

  • Fabric: use light-colored cotton, firm linen, gabardine or a smooth medium-weight blend. Dark fabric will reduce the airy effect of the pale watercolor areas.
  • Stabilizer: use Madeira Cotton Stable for stable woven fabric or self-adhesive Madeira Cotton Fix when the item is difficult to hoop. For soft fabric and the two largest files, first test a sample with a firmer cut-away backing.
  • Hooping: hoop the fabric and stabilizer evenly without stretching or slack. Do not pull the material while the machine is stitching.
  • Needle: begin with a 75/11 embroidery needle and replace it before this long stitch-out if the needle has already been used.
  • Top thread: Madeira Classic Rayon No. 40 according to the chart above; use a fine machine-embroidery bobbin thread in a suitable neutral color.
  • Test: stitch a sample on the same fabric with the same stabilizer, needle and tension planned for the final project.

How to Sew the Stocking After Embroidery

  1. Select the required embroidery size and prepare a fabric piece with generous margins on every side.
  2. Embroider the design before cutting the stocking shape; a large rectangular panel is easier to hoop and stabilize accurately.
  3. After embroidery, remove only the stabilizer allowed by its type and press the panel from the wrong side through a pressing cloth.
  4. Position your own stocking pattern, leaving a seam allowance outside the embroidered outer contour.
  5. Cut the back, lining, cuff and hanging loop, then assemble the stocking with your preferred sewing method.

Practical tip: mark only the key cutting reference points on the fabric before embroidery; do not cut out the stocking shape first. The full rectangular panel hoops more evenly, and the final pattern can be aligned precisely with the finished embroidery.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will I receive a finished Christmas stocking?

No. The purchase includes digital machine embroidery files only. No physical stocking or materials will be shipped.

Is this an In the Hoop project?

No. The machine stitches the decorative front panel. You need your own sewing pattern, lining and sewing skills to cut and assemble the stocking.

Does the smallest file fit a 5x7 hoop?

No. The smallest design measures 166.6x218.6 mm (6.56x8.61 in) and requires at least a 180x300 mm (7.09x11.81 in) embroidery field. Always check the usable field of your machine.

Why is the largest size supplied only in DST?

The 227.6x298.5 mm (8.96x11.75 in) file exceeds the supported limits of some domestic machine formats. This largest size is therefore included only in DST.

Can I stitch the design on dark fabric?

It may be possible after a test stitch, but the watercolor technique was created for a light-colored base. Pale and intentionally open areas will look different on dark fabric.

Can I change the thread colors?

Yes, but keep enough contrast between the stocking background, snowman, outlines and small holiday details. Review the color film and preserve the sequence of all 23 programmed blocks.

Can I resize the design?

Use one of the five original sizes whenever possible. Strong scaling changes density, stitch length, pull compensation and the quality of small details.

Is a test stitch necessary?

Yes. The files contain from 46925 to 76953 stitches, so a sample on comparable fabric helps verify stabilization, thread tension, colors and outline registration before embroidering the final panel.
