The head of MEDUSA GORGON as a decorative element is often found in architecture, on ancient household items, clothing and military paraphernalia. The first to wear this “embellishment” was the warlike goddess Athena when she placed the head with snakes on the shield. Her example was followed by Apollo and Zeus, who decorated their armor in this manner. It was not simply a desire to flaunt a triumph over the monster, the deities of antiquity believed that the so-called gorgoneion, the face of Medusa, was a strong protective talisman. Indeed, the Greek “Medusa” is translated as “guardian” or “protectress”. So why did such a horrible villain have such a wrong name?

The Greek myths tell us that MEDUSA GORGON was a hideous creature with snakes instead of hair, able at a glance to turn someone into a stone statue. She was slain by Perseus, who managed to cut off her head. However, the interpretation of this terrifying character is not so simple.

According to one version, the Gorgons were among divine beings of the Pantheon before the arrival of the Olympian deities. They were defeated and cast away by more powerful “Olympians”, gradually evolving in the minds of people in dreadful beasts. Medusa, the youngest of the Gorgon sisters, was a sea maiden, so beautiful that fascinated Poseidon himself. She tried to escape from him in the temple of Athena, praying to her for help, but the goddess not just ignored the plea, but also disfigured Medusa, turning her gorgeous hair into poisonous snakes.

MEDUSA GORGON took refuge in the mountains on the edge of the earth, but the bad reputation found her even there. Many warriors tried to kill the female monster, but one look at her face made all living things petrify. In the end, Athena sent Perseus to kill Medusa, teaching him how to do it. Afterwards, the Gorgon’s head, still able to transform other beings into stone, became the hero’s weapon against his enemies, and her blood was used as a cure to the most hopeless patients.

Following the example of gods, people began to use the gorgoneion as an amulet against the evil eye and other dangers. It was believed that any evil will be appalled by the nightmarish scene, won’t notice a human and recede in fear. You can also use the protective power of MEDUSA GORGON, placing the presented machine embroidery design on textiles. It will look especially good in the center of a tablecloth and on a decorative pillow.
