Short Midsummer night, or Ivan Kupala celebration, was mysterious for the ancient pagan Slavs. Young people did not go to sleep after the noisy festivities, but went to the nearby forest to look for the blooming fern.

When the darkness falls, a bud shows up between the long carved leafs and starts to grow rapidly. At midnight a fire flower blossoms, and its light is so bright that can blind and burn if you touch it with bare hands. All secrets of the universe will be opened to a person who manages to find and rip the flower: he will begin to understand the languages of people and animals, and even see the future. Any lock crumbles, if you hit it with the wonderworking flower, and buried precious treasures become visible.

The path to the magical plant is guarded by evil spirits, which strongly intimidate those who goes in search, causing them all sorts of mischief. A seeker will stumble, hit long and catchy branches, or fall into hidden by greens and gloom pits – it is not so easy to get the treasures and gifts of mother earth. Nonetheless, the belief that you can become rich and happy overnight, led people into the woods.

Of course, in the entire history no one was able to find the fern blossom. And the point here is not that there has been no decent man. In fact, this plant does not ever bloom, and propagated by spores. Faith of the Slavic people in the magic flower began to wane with the advent of Christianity. Though they continued to seek it out as a tribute to the ancient tradition. Today, this legend is told to children as an entertaining story, thus helping them to understand the rich culture of their people better.
