The first size fits a true 100x100 mm or 4x4 embroidery field. The other four sizes require a larger field; they fit within a 130x180 mm or 5x7 field when oriented correctly. Always compare both file dimensions with the actual embroidery area supported by your machine.

Madeira Classic Rayon color chart

The original design chart uses two Madeira Classic Rayon No. 40 thread colors. It lists the programmed sequence as 1166, 1378 and 1166. Keep the original sequence if your machine displays the final blue entry as a separate stop.

The screen swatches were calculated programmatically from the central thread area in the official Madeira USA product photographs. Thread shine, lighting and monitor settings can change the displayed color. Buy thread by the Madeira number, not by the HEX value.

Important color tip: the fabric creates the white stripes

This design contains blue and red embroidery only. The white parts of the American flag are negative space, so the fabric remains visible between the stitched lines. Use white, ivory or another very light fabric if you want a traditional red, white and blue result. On a dark or strongly colored textile, the open stripes will take on the fabric color.

Lifehack: for a dark denim jacket or tote bag, first sew or fuse a neatly cut white fabric panel behind the flag area, then embroider the design over that panel. Make a test sample before using this method on the finished item.

Best fabrics for this running-stitch flag

The open linear structure looks cleanest on smooth, stable and closely woven fabric. Good choices include cotton twill, linen, canvas, denim, poplin and smooth kitchen-towel fabric. Avoid high pile, loose weave and heavily textured surfaces because the fine lines can sink into the texture or lose their shape.

• Stable cotton, linen or twill: hoop the fabric with a medium-weight tear-away stabilizer without stretching it.
• Denim or canvas: use a suitable tear-away stabilizer and a sharp embroidery needle matched to the fabric weight.
• Frequently washed items: use quality 40-weight polyester embroidery thread for greater resistance to repeated washing.
• Decorative items: Madeira Classic Rayon No. 40 gives the lines a smooth, glossy finish.

How to embroider the flag on a T-shirt

1. Prewash and dry the T-shirt so later shrinkage does not distort the embroidered lines.
2. Mark the design center while the shirt is lying flat and confirm that the flag is level.
3. Fuse one layer of lightweight no-show cut-away stabilizer to the wrong side. Use a second support layer only if the jersey is very thin or unstable.
4. Hoop the shirt and stabilizer together without pulling or stretching the knit. Keep the back of the shirt and sleeves outside the stitching area.
5. Use a new embroidery ballpoint needle, usually 75/11, for standard cotton jersey.
6. Add a basting box if your machine supports it. It helps prevent the long running-stitch lines from shifting on stretchy fabric.
7. Embroider at a moderate speed and watch the first stars and stripes for fabric movement or looping.
8. After stitching, trim the cut-away stabilizer to approximately 10–15 mm around the design. Press from the wrong side over a soft towel.

Do not replace cut-away backing with tear-away on a stretchy T-shirt. Tear-away stabilizer disappears around the stitches after washing and leaves the jersey unsupported, which can make the long lines ripple. Water-soluble topping is normally unnecessary on smooth jersey because the fabric has no pile.
